Hi, have an 01 Buell X1, 15,000 miles with recent wires/plugs. The bike would not fire on the front cylinder so i narrowed it down to what i thought was the coil. I get spark from the coil for the front cylinder, but it is weaker than the back cylinder. At this point i Bought a used coil and it is doing exactly the same thing. I figure what are the chances that this second coil is bad. My question is what do you think is wrong with the bike probably the wiring harness correct? Its just weird because you get spark but not as strong as the front cylinder.

How are you testing for spark, with both spark plugs out and grounded?

The X1, I believe, is single spark which means that each spark plug fires independently. That means that there should be 3 primary wires to the coil (low voltage front signal, rear signal, +12V switched) and the 2 secondary high voltage spark plug cables.

If you suspect that the front cylinder is not firing well and you've changed coils with no change in symptoms, try the original again and, if you can do this easily, swap the low voltage signal wires at the end terminals on the coil (front and rear wires) and then check to see if the spark produced at the front spark plug is improved.

If there's no change in symptoms, check the resistance of the spark plug cables with an ohmmeter to verify there is not a break in either cable which would show up as a very high resistance condition.

I checked all wires from the ecm to the coil connector, and all wires came back with 1 ohm of resistance, which I think should be acceptable. i want to try to put a timing light on the harness (where the coil connects to the harness), crank over the engine, and see what it is doing(see if i get the light to flash for both the front/rear cylinders coil connectors). I think that would tell me if I have an ECM problem. I guess I should also do a check on the coil, there is a way to do it in the service manual. I know for a fact that the plug wires and spark plugs are not the issue (i eliminated them first). I was just wondering if someone thought it might be the voltage regulator or something, however its only the front cylinder that misses. If you ride the bike the front cylinder will miss until you reach about 3000 rpms and it comes on like nothing is wrong at all, which sort of makes me think it could be a charging issue. I tested the spark by putting the plug to a ground on the engine and cranking the engine over, and looking at spark.

Finally, i ordered an ecm spy cable yesterday, i have used the program before. And I want to test the front and rear coil when I get it in. I also should do a compression test but i did one by putting my finger over the sparkplug hole and cranking it over, it feels like it has alot. When I did this a spark from the coil (still attached) arched from the coil to my hand, 4 inches away, and that hurt a lot(20,000 volts).
