Any new ideas for getting the base gasket to separate from the cylinders? I'm basically shaving the material a little at a time with a razor. Brake cleaner doesn't affect it other than make it easier because it's wet. Same with Permatex foaming remover, though that really meant for adhesives. I'm into this three hours, and will probably spend another three that I really don't have unless I get a breakthrough.

I use gasket remover. You can get it at any auto parts store. Just spray it on.

My gaskets laugh at the best my auto parts store had to offer and asks if that's all I got. I just finished. If anyone had told me I'd spend the entire day removing two small gaskets I wouldn't have believed them. I'm sure I must have been doing it wrong, but it's done.

Take it to a shop and have them shave 5 thou off the bottom. In fact, you should try to set squish area and you'll probably want them to shave off more.

i agree with Eric. im a harley mechanic and thats the way we do it. have a machine shop put it in a jig and shave it off. its almost impossible to get a paper gasket all the way off. and theres a good chance youll (and i know from experience)gouge the cylinder and possibly cause leaks by using a razor blade

there is a better way it is a green wheel it looks like a wire wheel butit is plastic put in a drill you just have to careful and not get in too the cylinders to hard it goes fast

you don't set squish by the bottom of the cylinder you will mes up the piston tdc. i would set it with the head gasket you don't need the piston in the hole or past 0deck i would not go cuting on the jug befor checking it with the new gasket first

Check your piston to deck height before you bring it to a machine shop....then have them trim the base to get "0" deck then use a .030 head gasket and your squish will be .030..................Headcase
