Don't know how long it's been like this but my speedo/odometer won't work. The needles do the sweep thing when turning the bike on but only the tach works....any clues? |

Same thing here. At first stopping and switching power off & on helped, not any more. The gauge itself appears to work (sweep OK, switching mode & resetting trip works) but no signal coming in. Loose coupling somewhere, where, how to access, anyone? |

Sounds like a problem with the speedo sensor. It could be defective or there could be a break in one of the wires from the sensor to the ECM / Instruments or it could be metal debris on the sensor's pickup. I'd investigate the speedo sensor which is located on top of the tranny in the area inward from the belt front pulley cover. There is a bolt holding it onto the tranny's top. Remove the bolt and take the sensor out to inspect, looking for metal chips or other debris on the pickup. If it looks OK, then trace its wires to the connector under the belt front pulley cover, looking for damaged insulation, breaks, etc. |

Thanks, cleaned it & checked wiring, no help. Concluded it's toasted, a new one works. |

I'm sure it must have been the senser. At least that is what it was on mine. |

Yep, sensor it was. For all that I've found myself or read, must be the #1 cause, if obviously fractured wires not found. All connectors are pretty sturdy. Like said, although it's not a proper test, if the needles do the sweep and switching the odo mode & resetting trip (if there happens to be miles) works, it hardly is the gauge. The sensor is also quite accessible for cleaning & replacing. |
