Folks: fiance's 07 Scg 30A (battery) fuse keeps blowing. She parked the bike out in the rain one night and the next morning nothing. checked the fuses, 30A shot, replaced and blew as I was inserting with the key out of the ignition. disonncected the battery (both postive and negative) inserted another fuse same thing. No accessories conneced to bike nor battery.I am not sure where or what to start with in the finding the problem. It sounds like a short to me, but I am elctronicly almost illeterate. Help, all I know about electronics is that if you are not careful the electrons escape in a cloude of smoke. |

Fuel pump wire chaffed by the sounds of it. Search the Knowledge Vault and it will tell you what needs to be done. If it is still under warranty perhaps you might take it to a dealer. If the battery has shorted/collapsed internally it would also blow the fuse. Check your voltage/resistance to see. (Message edited by Bombardier on May 27, 2009) |

Are you saying your blowing fuses without the batt. connected??? If not it would seem to be in the start circuit or a short in a wire coming off the start solenoid. Especially with the key off. I just have M2's though. |

No accessories connected to the bike or the battery. |

Buell Bert-Nope. When the battery is not connected no fuse blowing. Only with the battery connected. I also do not even have the key in the ignition. with the key in my pocket I put the 30A in and it blows out. I disconnect the battery insert the fuse no problem, but when I connect the battery + fisrt, then -. when negative cable touches battey, a spark and blown fuse. Bombardier-i thought the ignition needed to be turned on for the fuel pump wires to get current to blow the fuse? Perhaps I should take the battery out of the SCG and put it in my Uly and see if the same thing happens? Gents thanks for the help so far, (Message edited by pso on May 28, 2009) |

The 30A fuse goes to the voltage regulator, a Key Switch relay contact, ECM fuse and the Cooling Fan fuse. Note: for the following 30A fuse tests, if you don't want to keep blowing 30A fuses and you have a spare headlight handy and are good at wiring up things, extend two wires from the headlight and attach them to the 30A fuse socket terminals. Then if the bike's short persists, all that will happen is the headlight will illuminate; and if the short goes away, the headlight should not light up on the theory that the few milliamps draw when the battery is connected and key is OFF is not sufficient to power the headlight. So, try taking out each of those fuses one at a time to see if the 30A fuse stops blowing (or the test headlight goes out). If no success, then remove the Key Switch relay and test the 30A fuse. If no success, then find the 77 connector (goes to the voltage regulator) behind the main drive belt front sprocket, disconnect it and test the 30A fuse. If still no success, the problem must be somewhere in the wire harness down stream from the 30A fuse socket or in the socket itself. |

Sparky, Thanks, Just use a standard old auto headlight or one of those like an H6 or H7? If so I can connect a wire to booth tangs on the light and then insert them into the fuse receptle. |

Yes, one of those types will work. Let us know how it goes. Good hunting! |

sparky_thanks- I will keep you posted. I checked last night and Sara's warrenty expired 4/27/09 three weeks before this episode. I am also going to try and get the dealer to work on it under warrenty. |

If you have ECMSpy, I'd run a test on the fan as well. I had a problem with my fan blowing fuses and found the fan had crapped out. Just another option... |

Thanks folks: After a sleepless night during which I looked up fiance's purchase date I found that she was 3 weeks over the experation of warrenty, the bike that is. Just talked with Buell of Annapolis and they are going to see if Buell will cover, they say that buell is very good about it. so I will have them do the work. I hate electrical stuff, but I sure apprecite all the help. When I get more info I will pass it along to the enquiring minds. |

Unfortunately, in this case, Pso doesn't have the option of running ECMspy because, for one, the ECM is dead without a good 30A fuse supplying it power. Good thinking though, if he could make it work. |

Sparky-I didn't take the time to hook up a light, but I thought what I would do is take out all the fuses and everything else that plugs into the fuse box and then put them back in one at a time and see which one blows out the 30A. Well I took everything out and when I put a new fuse in the 30A slot it blew. What do you make of them apples? I hope that Buell steps up to the plate and covers the repaire under warrenty, even though it expired 20 some days prior to the problem. |

Well good. That eliminates the ECM and the Cooling Fan as culprits. What's left is the wire harness from the fused part of the 30A fuse socket, the Key Switch Relay socket and the Voltage Regulator. That scenario will take a bit of sleuthing to find what might be a chafed wire in the wire bundle or an insidious short in a component. Hopefully the dealer can sort it out quickly. |

So far this is what I know. The bill is $275. They are working with Buell to get them to pay. also they said it was a chaffed wire left side down at the front lower spoiler. I have not seen the bike yet so do not know which wire it is. |
