Guys
I am starting to get cold feet about my 01 M2 ,it's a Uk spec engine, done 35000 miles. I don't thrash it,and change the oil at 2500 miles, but post's on UKBEG seem to indicate that cranks fail on M2's
Whats the consensus in the US, do the motors last, are there plenty of Thunderstorm motors with high mileage's
Help steady my resolve.
Cheers
Lee

Yours is just getting broke in, Buellistic (LaFayette Jenne') has over 107,000 miles on his S3T and the top end has never been off.

Is the S3T a full power engine, or in sportster tune ,as I believe pre T/S and US spec engines may be.

Mostly right...the 98 S3 and S1W (NOT regular S1) US models with T-storm heads and Lightning cams with the 2.5" collector are 101HP. The 97 S3 and all non-S1W S1s have Lightning heads and cams and are 91HP. The 99+ T-storm M2s are also 91HP, but that's because they still have the sportster cams. Euro models are a bit different, due to 2" collectors and minor airbox changes.

If the engine hasn't been thrashed, and it doesn't have a "Monday morning or Friday afternoon" crank in it, the engine is solid for many more miles than that. There may be some minor issues along the way (i.e., base gasket leak, for instance), but as long as the bike has been reasonably maintained and not hammered-on when cold, it should be good for many more miles.

The big things to look out for:
1) Oil pump drive gear- depending on how much pinion shaft runout the engine has, this gear can be pristine at 30K, or thrashed at 15K. Best to drop the oil pump and check it at 30K, and replace it with the new Be-Cu gear if it is worn on one side.
2) By 30K, most intake seals are gonna be history. You can check them if you want, but I'd probably just plan on replacing them.
3) If you haven't had a stator failure by now, you will soon. Seems 25-30K is the magic number on those.
4) Center seam weep below the starter seems to be pretty common at that mileage. More of an annoyance than anything else.

Check the above, ride it, and don't worry. It'll tell you if it needs something. I doubt I'd take a 30K M2 to the remote wilderness by myself, but other than that, I wouldn't sweat it.

Thanks for that,I did drop the oil pump, at 28000 ,I posted pics on here, it had slight wear on one side ,but the opinion was it was O.K. for a while yet. I also took out the output shaft plug for a look at the needle roller bearing, which I believe can corrode and fail, again it looked O.K.just a slight amount of play.
I am told by the Buell experts here in the UK that european Tubers don't have sportster cams, and that would fit in with the difference I feel between my old XL1200S,which pulls strong from 2000 rpm, and my M2 which needs to be above 3000, and flies at 4500.
My resolve is a lot steadier for the encouraging replies your side of the pond,
I think we tend to be a bit negative here, probably all the rain.
Cheers
