I just took delivery of a new pair of ICON Hooligan gloves from Kneedraggers.com. I'm impressed, very impressed. The leather is very heavy, the knuckle protection is excellent and actually contributes to the flexibility of the glove, and the protection for the palm is impressive. Both design and construction are exceptional. ICON gloves tend to run a tad small, so I got an XL pair instead of my ususal Large. | ||

i picked up a pair of icon gloves this past october, built really nice and definitely run small, i take a large and ended up buying 2XL so if anybody ever orders a pair keep that in mind! i purchased the timax gloves for the cool medieval look and am very happy with them. | ||

I was also looking at the TiMax. I finally decided to go with the Alpinestars GP tech.  I am very happy with them. I have been riding with them for almost a year now and they show no sign of wear at all. The only thing I don't like is that they have air flow vents. Great for weather 50 or higher, but sometimes here in Wisconsin I am riding in below zero! Someone recommended those HotGrips electric hand grip warmers, maybe if I can scratch up the $100 I will try those. I would never ride without gloves, I like my hands the way they are  | ||

Yup. They go on real easy. I added a heatroller (also available from that link) just to be fancy but I'm sure the 3-way switch that comes with it would be fine. Here's some instructions: http://www.fjr1300.info/mods/heatedgrips.html but the grips come with a detailed set of instructions. To remove/install the grips, get an air compressor with a ball needle. stick the needle between the bar and the grip and hit go. It "inflates" the grip and lets you slide on/off real easy. | ||

Henrik, if memory serves, has used the "cheap" wrap-type heaters and had great luck with them. I've heard this from others as well. | ||

Awesome instructions! I'm sold on those. You can never have too many dials and buttons on the dash. Do you think they sell that kit at bike shops, or am I just better off ordering it? I want to install them today! | ||

order online. I don't think Dual-Star sells to any big distributors (in fact you'll have to call them to order). Take a look at warm and safe to see the different options for the adjust unit. The hand grip one is the basic kit. Get the Semi-mounted if you don't have a panel to drill. I have two of the $49 hand grip heattroller kits installed in the dash just like you see in the FJR pics. | ||

Teenc, you need to develop a glove fetish and have a pair of gloves for each season. Check out Icon's Patrol Gloves. I just got a pair and they are terrific. Since it's so chilly where you are and Icons tend to run a little small, recommend you order a size or two bigger than normal and use a thin glove liner (I use Patagonia glove liners) on the really cold days. | ||

I crashed a pair of Buell Puck gloves a about 40mph recently. They are a lightweight summer glove, and had taken a lot of damage. All the stitching in the palms had ripped, and my hands were saved only by the remaining loose flaps of leather. I think at any higher speed I probably would've sustained some injury to my hands. Before this happened one of the rubber pads fell off one of the fingers under normal use. I've used middle of the road AGV Sport gloves in the past. These lasted me almost 3 years (through rain, sleet, and even snow) and even survived a similar incident with little more than a scuff. I now have AGV Quicksilver gloves as a replacement. I like 'em a lot. Buell Asphalt gloves look great but vented gloves suck in cool weather. I love the metal-clad Icon long style gloves, but they're a bit too pricey for me. | ||

I just bought a pair of ICON TiMAX shorties from a guy advertising in the local craigslist for 50 bucks. He said he wore 'em about 20 times, but they were too hot (not enough ventilation). I live in the Phoenix area...all gloves are too hot here in the summer. The reason I got 'em was for the winter months when the temps dip slightly below 100 (J/K). I was looking for the Hooligans, but the price was right on these. They are size Large and are a bit tight on me. Does anyone know if they stretch a little after some wear? If not I might want to post them in the classified section of Badweb for sale or trade. | ||

Dagwood, I had the same size problem with a pair of TiMAX long gloves. I used many, many applications of the Leather Care product available at Harley-Davidson dealerships and tried my level best to break them in and get them to give a little. I didn't have much success. The gloves (I just sold them) are made from very thick and dense leather and although they're broken in and flexible now, they didn't stretch one iota. Does anybody have any experience with Teknic gloves? I'm interested in the Violator and Speedstar models, but they're expensive and there's no place in my vicinity that carries them on the rack. | ||

Similar to the ICON Hooligan is the Joe Rocket Supermoto glove. I've been riding with them all season. Love 'em! Lots of ventilation though so on chilly days I'm freezing. A note of caution about the Alpinestars SM-X shorties which I wore two sets of... saw the aftermath of a low-speed crash in these, not pretty. Kids hands were toast. The Joe Rockets (and I believe the ICON Hooligans) have more leather. | ||

I don't know how you all feel about Cycle Gear's Frank Thomas line they carry, but I just got a pair of their roo skin gloves that are normally $130 for $89 on sale. Creeater, Yup, the ICON Hooligan gloves are short-cuffed, all right. You probably can't see it in an on-line photo, but there are small star-shaped holes in the leather in places that will catch wind. They're really a fair weather glove, in my opinion. I wear them under the cuffs of my riding jacket - there's really no other way to wear them. I'm still sold on these gloves, by the way. I've had a lot of gloves in 25+ years of riding, and they're my all time favorites. | ||

I got the Icon Timax longs off Russ. They fit me perfect and they ride good. Two minor niggles. One of the thumbs I can feel a portion of the lining / seam or similar. The other thing, where the wrist has the little velcro tag the tag itself is attached to the glove with a 'D' ring held in another short tag. The stitching is weak but worse still for a top quality glove the 'D' ring does not have joined ends which means the 'D' ring can part and let the tag go. Did I mention they're a pain in the arse to take off when you're filling up with go go juice or sat at a toll booth!! I've got the Alpinestar GP Pro's too and they're taking forever to break in. The Frank Thomas roo gloves are, or were, retailing for £100 over here. $89 has to be a bloody steal for a race glove of this quality. Don't get me wrong but I'm no fan of FT products but there are odd things they do that are really good. Research is the key which usually means a short trip down the same road for me to the Hein Gerike store. Rocket | ||

I need gloves! I would like gloves that go over my jacket, and I want good protection. I have been looking at the websites posted above. Does any one have any experince with Shift Racing. I was looking at the Dyer Hybrid. If the wife says I can't spend that much, I was looking at the Brawler. What do you think? |
