I have found a used set of cylinders for my xb9 & before using was thinking of having them bored, to ensure that they are as round as possible. Can anybody give me info on the next size up piston size? I know that they (harley) do have some over-bore replacement pistons, but i'm really not getting the info that I need from my dealership. Not looking for a big bore, just need to know what size the next over-bore would be |

There are no oversize pistons from the Company for the XB. At least not according to the Parts Book. You may find aftermarket pistons (Wiseco) but these will be forged instead of cast. Regards Alex M-TeK Engineering |

Why wouldnt the factory sell oversize pistons? Is there any special reasons why they would want you to go back to the stock bore and buy a cylinder w/pistons. I also checked the parts manual for several years and found oversize pistons werent available. I dont have an XB repair manual to double check if they give any specs for an overbore. I guess I'm really just asking the question again. Really, factory over bore not available? |

probly the same reason they sell sportster 883 to 1200 conversion cylinders and pistons instead of just taking the exact same cylinder you have on the bike and boring it out. TO MAKE MORE MONEY!! if they dont offer oversize pistons then you wont have a choice but to buy the more expensive cylinder/piston kit |

While I'm no so sure the cynical answer is correct, it does bring me to another question: Can you really overbore 883 cylinders 1/2 inch? |

The 883 and 1200 cylinders are the same. The 883 has a 3" bore, and the 1200 a 3.5". Both the XB9 and XB12 use a 3.5" bore as well. |

Thanks. I just had a hard time believing the 883's had an extra 1/2 inch of machinable, usable, metal on them. Anybody know if the 883, 1200 and XB all have the same size fins/cooling area? FWIW, I did call the dealer and they said that a factory XB9 overbore wasnt available, but he wasnt real sure and it wasnt in the parts catalogue. Thanks to this thread I have more options as I seem to be going through a top end a year racing and its mostly the rings and cylinder wearing out and money is tight. |
