I ordered a drive belt # 40014-94Y, for my '96 S1, this # is obsolete and is replaced with #G0500.8. I'm hoping that this new number, (more expensive), is a stronger , better unit. Does this sound right? |

Stronger ? , Better ? , I doubt it . Sportster belts fit , compare the price , I have found Buell prices to be lower than HD prices , but here in Canada pricing is , ...... um ...... WELL ..... slightly different than what US customers would pay , something to do with our weak dollar , and the distributor in Canada ( also weak ). |

Yeah, Anon is right, Go with a Chain and Sprockets - A hell of a lot more reliable. I did it!!! |

Belt? chain? here we go again! I didn't think a toothed belt would cost $140!!! , maybe the chain conversion would have been a better way to go.I'm still a believer in the belt, BMW's are going to them. But with the breakage, which was news to me ,the cost and the difficult replacement, I'm wondering.It seems the old way sometimes comes around again and becomes the best way. |

Exposed chains SUCK!!! Only if you don't care for them properly. They can take a lot of abuse and come back smiling. I assume by exposed you mean exposed to the elements as they come from the factory and not missing the all important chain guard and tensioner. Had a cousin that lost a leg to a fully exposed 1950's chain when it broke. But that was what he deserved for running his flat tracker on the street and not maintaining it. I would take a good O-ring chain over a belt any day. Maintenance is nothing compared to roadside repair or the ability to easily change sprockets. Especially true when I used to change sprockets for street riding vs desert racing on the KLR. Won't even bother to comment on the ineptitude of a belt offroad or even on a poorly maintained road. Belts are a "Poor Man's" Shaft Drive and a God Send to Cheap Manufacturer's. LOL Oh man, am I going to get flamed on this one. |
