OK, so yet another problem with the ol 99 X1. I have been getting a low battery voltage code for a little while now. At first it would come on when I first started the bike then went away after the bike warmed up and had been turning for a bit. It would also come on if I was sitting at a light for a decent period of time, but a could cracks of the throttle and gone. OK, bad battery, changed it. NOW the same code is still there and the check engine light comes on right at start up and stays on even with the motor turning high RPM. Generator mesa think. My question is what is the high fail part of this problem so I can start there. I do have the service manual and should have some time this weekend to work on it. Also, if someone is using ECMSpy, what is the voltage supposed to be on the overview tab. I think mine was 10V last checked. Thanks for the time. Ed |

Hook a multimeter to the battery terminals, start the bike, and run the RPMs up to 2k. You should see about 14-14.5v at that engine speed. If not, you do have a charging problem. Make sure the battery ground cable is good, and making good contact w/the frame. If so, then the problem will be with the alternator or the voltage regulator. The service manual has the procedures to check the alternator and voltage regulator. Should be fairly easy to pinpoint the problem. Hope this help, Dave. |

Just got done troubleshooting my X1 and come to find out, I have a bad regulator. Here is the interesting part, it is a short in the wire. (WTF!!!) I did all the test, good res on the stator, good AC coming out, no DC leaving the regulator, good ground on the regulator, and good resistance from the regulator to the battery. I, for giggles and shit, went to check the resistance across the pins on the regulator and as I was moving it around, I found a short. Could I open it up and repair, probably, I am 2M certified, but I am to lazy to do all that work. SO, the question is, what is the going rate for a voltage regulator? Thanks for the help. |

Also, where would be the best place to get one, other than your local dealer? |
