I have a 2000 X1, just got through replacing rocker box gaskets and intake gaskets. I had the pushrods out while the rocker boxes were off, and all of the tranny fluid & engine oil was out for about 2 weeks while I was working on it all. I also had the cam cover off to check the oil pump drive gear. 99.9% sure I got the cams back in proper alignment but the engine started almost imediately.. I assume it wouldn't run at all with cams out of alignment.

I just got her back together, and I'm getting a loud tapping noise coming from the front right side of the engine that wasn't there before. Is it possible that a pushrod isn't seated perfectly on the tappet? Or would that have caused major damage immediately?

I only let the engine run 5-10 seconds because the noise worries me. Could the noise be from either tranny fluid or engine oil not circulating through yet? Should I just start her up again and wait for fluids to circulate? The oil pressure light went off very quickly just like after every oil change, but I'm thinking tranny fluid may not be circulating yet?

Any ideas?

Let it idle for a few minutes, making sure the oil light goes out. Sometimes a lifter can drain and then it takes several minutes of idling for the lifter to refill and resume normal silent operation.

I let her idle for a while then went for a short ride and she quieted down.

NO! Never fill the tapets! Ensure, that the lifter's pistons are moving freely without any blockage instead or you will end with bent valves.

Why?!?!?

Have always prelubed lifter on every engine I have built.

Unless I am wrong the lifter at its maximum fill has the correct valve clearance.

A lifter extended to it's maximum might give too less clearance and when filled with oil, can't be compressed, thus you will be running into problems.

if you "pre-lube" the lifters, just make sure you let them bleed down before turning the motor over, to ensure the proper clearance.
