I had my 2004 XB kick stand pivot bolt break on me. I know it's been a reported problem for a few years so, I always checked it when I service the bike. Well at 40K it's done! I checked out the factory fix which is to buy a new kick stand with a new pivot pin for about $60. That just didn't taste real good, beside you know the order and wait routine for parts. I come up with my own fix. A 1/2" X 2 1/2" shoulder bolt with 3/8" x 16 thread. I drilled and tapped the kick stand for the new larger thread. I then put the shoulder bolt in a drill and turned it while I used a die grinder to reduce the shank diameter to what was needed to fit the "S" bracket that connects to the return spring. So with just a little shop work and a $4 bolt I'm better than new. The shoulder bolts are tougher than nails, so to speak, and the thread diameter increased from 5/16" to 3/8" and there is no stress riser at the thread shoulder like the factory bolt/pin. The 1/2" shoulder fit the pivoting portion of the kick stand perfect too.         | ||

The 05 model bolt/pin looks fatter. same damb thing happened on mine from shipping guy. leaned real bad? Good thing is the shipping wind up costing me only 280 bucks because he also broke the rear brake line strapping it down, and lost a bar end 3 in mirror somewhere across usa. | ||

Not fatter I guess it looked that way. I did what you did and instead of going across town the get a 5/16 axle pin I followed advice you did gowindward and went 3/8 thread and yeah it's certainly stronger and works great. But after 1 1/2 hrs of pain getting a tap that broke out I say that I am very tired of Irwin products. Anyhow, much thanks for that advice it got me out of a pinch! |
