I love my scorpion syncs but after 9k miles its time to replace the rear, and i want to try a 170 since that's what the manual recommends for my x1. I can't find a single tire manufacturer making a 170/55 ZR17. Would it be better to stick with a 180/55? or try a 170/60? I'm considering trying either the Metzeler Roadtec Z6 or Avon Storm ST - both of which are offered in either the 180/55 or 170/60 size. If anyone has experience with any of these tires and sizes on a tuber please let me know what you think. |

Ordered a Diablo Strada today in a 170/60 size. Hope they work as well as reviewed because they'll get here in just the nick of time. Yesterday, while rounding a 270-degree on-ramp, I got a little more movement from the rear end than I'm comfortable with. Actually thought I was going down for a moment but once again - this bike is SO forgiving! Can't wait to see how the Strada measures up to the Scorpion, and get the X1 back to 100% on the curves! |

In all the time I have ben following tires and designs AND size's, I have only seen one 170-55-17 the"55" not a normal tire size in the 170's, and it was on Avons supermoto SLICK. I may have missed one somewhere but I doubt it. The 170 will likely feel better transitioning from lean to lean back and forth because as the 180 is squeezed on the too small a rim it will have a taller center and be effectivly more v shaped, the round leaning transition of a 170 verses the sudden curve, flat, curve of the 180. The 180 looks cool, but without having 5.5" rims is a cramped fit thus forcing the crown higher in the middle and flattening the sides bottom line the 180's feel more sketchy going into a lean and coming out of a lean to upright position. i have recently put a 180-55-17 continental on my x1 to be honest i dont notice a whole lot of a difference in ride quality or turn-ability the only noticeable difference i can truly feel is at high speeds on the interstatea, the bike feels a little more stable...could be my imagination though |
