Hey everyone. Ok let's start off with the most basic of question. I get that my 95 S2 has a sportster motor in it. I am looking through a few website and catalogs for some performance parts. Yes I am also looking in the Screaming Eagle catalog. Here is my question. When engine do I have? Evolution 1340? And what Harley model would I reference for parts like a new ECM or CAMS. Sorry for the simplicity of my questions. thanks and be good. |

Engine is stock 1200cc Sportster but was called free breathing due to aircleaner and exhaust. ECM is stock Sportster but varies due to number of pins in connector. Cams were stock Sportster.. |

Found an article on the web. a review from 1995 in Motorcycle Magazine. They did a minor screaming eagle upgrade to their S2 Just mild cams and a new ECM. and got excellent results. I was thinking about heading that direction. But just wasn't sure what parts I should be ordering. Thanks for the info S2pengy |

The thunderstorm heads or even the XB-style heads would be a nice addition to your bike. For a few hundred dollars you could really wake her up. |

If modified to Thunderstorm or XB, does the exhaust need to be updated to 2 1/2 as well? I've got a '96 that needs some work, and as far as I know hasn't been started for quite awhile. It seems like newer heads are step 1, but I don't want to lose what I hear is a nice low end power band. My "daily" rider is an S3, and the power band for that bike is really a little on the high side for how I normally ride. I'm stuck between cleaning up "as is" and hoping to be happy or modifying to make up the hp gap and hoping there's still power down low. |

It doesn't have to be. Your exhaust will still bolt up. You may not reach the full HP potential at high RPM with the slightly smaller pipe, but I would think it would be negligible. |

"My "daily" rider is an S3, and the power band for that bike is really a little on the high side for how I normally ride." Thunderstorm heads and pistons with stock cams would essentially give you similar power characteristics to an M2... lots of low and midrange with a flat top end. I agree that a 2" diameter collector header and muffler shouldn't be an issue if this is the kind of power you want, but its effect won't be negligible... it should make the torque peak at a lower RPM than a similar engine with 2 1/2" pipe. I toyed with the idea of building a top end motor... but mid range is really where the fun is, especially in the twisties. Let us know how it all works out. |

Then skip the heads and add a big bore 88in kit. More costly but well worth the cost if torque is what you are really after. Makes for a nice winter project |

I have a Thunderstorm top end on my S2. I also have a race header installed with a 2 1/2" collector. It's mounted up to a shortened V&H can. Stock cams, stock crank. Pretty decent setup really. The difference is VERY noticable. I'd do it again in a heart beat. Brad |

What would the difference be between an S3 and and S2 with a Thunderstorm top end? At that point why not XB heads? I thought the bottom end was pretty much the same (other than the lightened crank)on all and the difference was in the head or the pistons. The 88" idea for the S3 has caught my attention. An 88" for the S3, Thunderstorm heads to the S2, leftover pieces to the S3 frame in the basement.... just got to liberate the $$$ (Message edited by Easy_Rider on September 11, 2008) |

Between the S3 and the S2? Main difference is the cams and fuel injection. The S2 crank is quite a bit heavier so it revs a bit slower. But down low it is smoother. Brad |

It just depends how mechanical you are or how much money you have... If you just want a torque monster, take apart the motor and send cases for boring and buy the 88 kit and maybe 536 cams... pretty sure you would get 100hp and over 100ft lbs ... of course you can take it to crazy levels if you want... like mine... check out my profile... but for a sleeper torque monster that is all you need. |

Looked at your profile. What a beast! An 88 kit and cam sounds like where I'm heading. I've seen the 88" recommendation more than once. Talked to an S2 owner in Indy this weekend that talked about going to the 536s. There seems to be a pattern... |

88" are great motors for the heavier touring models for sure... they help move the extra mass around. You should try to find one in your area to ride and see if you like it I think you can get a 88" kit for around $899 add a few hundred for case boring and let her eat! Unless you want to keep throwing dollars at it and get even more goodies... but that simple plan would get you going and having lots of fun. Later |
