My project is taking to long to get goin and i need to talk about big bore strokers

anyone done a 99"
this is the engine im building i have all the stuff and my cases are bored. just trying to get a couple grand extra for flywheel work and heads work. oh and cylinder boring.
well i was aming for 130 but im thinkin of backing it down to 120 just for longevity. well figured id spark up some conversation about this kind of thing. i know everyone loves this stuff so here we are.!

so what was ur set up and how was the outcome

The people who produce the 90" barrels cite the cases as being the restrictive factor in going any bigger. One even says that 88" is the safe limit due to the lack of casting material where the barrels meet the case after machining.

Dare I suggest some prudent aluminium welding to the outside of the area to 'bulk' it up?

This may give the required strength to stretch the limits of short wheelbase sanity.

For those with really deep pockets a set of specially cnc'd thicker cases would be the solution with the 6th gear thrown in to really wrench those arms out of their sockets.

The required case spigot bore diameter for the 90" and the 88" are the same so there is no difference in safe limits due to lack of casting material after boring the case. No one of my 88" or 90" engines ever had a problem with the crank case.

I just had a 90" engine with stock XB chassis on the drag strip (just strapped down front and rear). It made a 10.68 with over 133 mph top speed which is a good indication for engine power.

Unfortunately I can´t tell You anything about a 99" engine.

well its bore is 3 13/16, the stroke is 4 5/16, same as s&s 89".
Zippers advertises the 99" but unfortunatly in a buell application the added heigth of 1/2" makes it a little to tall. so i guess u need to modify the frame some.
Man a 6 speed would be nice. the 1500 is a hard price to swallow.

alex thats a nice time. where do u race? and for a stock shocked vehicle. what was ur 60ft, oh well for a half mile i guess what is it 300ft time

I see a lot with old iron heads they would weld plates on the case's up on the side of spigot holes(on big bore appliction). Has anyone thought about doing this with the evo motors,or xb. when using the 90" aluminum cylinders this might help from blowing out the cases. just a thought on it. It would make sense to just do it for precution, no?

Thanks Jmr1283.

We race over here in Europe (or You might say "over there" ). It was on the Rotenburg airfield in Germany with unprepared runway (no "glue"). We normally run a Street Harley dragster in the 9 second area. This time we just wanted to see what an XB with a hot engine can do. The best 60ft time my driver could do was a 1.863

it is probably hard to launch with a lot of power in a street bike. thats why ur 60ft is higher then expected for such power i would think. plus rate after u left the line u have a good chance of losing traction.

alex if u would mind me asking, howd u get in this field?

The major reason for the 60 ft time is the really short wheelbase. You can´t use all the power as You have to fight massively against the front wheel coming above Your head. My pilot (as I´m not the driver) says the engine would be good for a 10.0 or maybe a high 9 with an appropriate chassis.

You want to know how I came to drag racing?
Basically I run a HD and Buell tuning shop. Some years ago a guy stood in my shop door with a hand full of engine parts asking for help. He turned out to be one of Germany´s best drag race pilots in Street class who´s former sponsor went bankrupt. So I built him an engine. During the first test race he was the first ever in Germany to break the 10 second line in street twin class. This was in 2005. Up to now he holds 3 championships and an European record still using the old engine. For me it was one of the best things to having met this guy named Stefan Graff. That´s the story.

i can only imagine. jeeze with a stock xb at 4500rpms the wheel doesnt want to stay down. man that must be a fun bike to ride. (off the starting line)
That bike must be in the 150+ power range?
good build. with nitrous right?

Funny alex how things happen. what a good turn of events for u. to have the motor last that long is pretty dang good for a drag motor. so there hasnt been any replaced parts. clutch etc...?
Im hoping i can get at least 5 yrs out of this new 99" motor as a daily driver.
good job alex.

Depends on the dyno

No. It is a purely natural aspirated engine.

Just to avoid any misunderstanding: the XB is a "normal" street bike which has been taken to the strip just once to see how it performs. Our real drag bike is a 4 gear Sportster. It started its life as a 1987 883 Sporty. Stefan raced it for a long time, modified the chassis and the engine went through several modifications as well (1200cc, cams, head work....) until it came to me in 2004. I put it into its final state, a 96" custom built engine. It still uses the stock crankcase but that´s about all beeing left from the old 883. I installed different cams, crank, customized pistons and all other necessary parts including a heavily modified set of XB heads. Since its first race as 96" in 2005 no part has been changed. All that is done is changing the oil and charging the battery. It made about 100 dyno pulls and probably more than 100 1/4 mile runs up to now. Still some weeks ago we had a problem with the gear box. During opening the gear box while expecting to find a lot of broken parts inside we found nothing unusual there. After reinstalling everything was fine again. Probably the shifter mechanism was just stuck in a weird position. So actually it is a pretty trouble free engine. And I am really glad about that as I just don´t have the time to repair it on a regular basis

Im hoping i can get at least 5 yrs out of this new 99" motor as a daily driver.
good job alex.

Thanks.

Well i hope the bike stays out of the shop!

well alex it seems like ill be joining the buell club. i found a x1 for 400 bucks minus the motor that im buying. now i just have to fit my 99" in it. lol should be interesting.

You probably ment with a 4 1/4 stroke. And no it is a 3 7/8 bore with 4 1/16 stroke (special application crank).

Well i hope the bike stays out of the shop!

Me,too.

"I built a 99ci. 147 hp, 133t!"

Without pics and a copy of the dyno sheet it never happened. ; )
