hey everyone, great site, i just signed up!(2001 X1 Lightning with 12,800 miles) I was doing some research since electrical is my weak point and i have an electrical issue. When I turn my key to the start position,i am not getting my headlight or warning lights. My fuel pump and check engine light do not come on when i hit the run switch. Essentiall the bike seems to be in the first key position- i have turn signals, parking light, speedo lit, odometer and horn but thats it. My starter relay was freaking out so i installed a new starter relay and ignition relay which solved the problem...for a day. I looked at the wires on the ign switch and saw some fraying so i thought maybe i was shorting out. I taped up the wires and re-installed the switch- same symptoms. i then popped out the relays and all of the fuses(to check them and they were all good). i put them back in and the bike started-everything seemed good even though i didnt fix anything(i hate that). I took it for a 10 minute ride, parked it and when i tried to restart 30 minutes later- back to the same problem. Now seeing how there are many things in this 'circuit'(bank angle, clutch switch, kick stand switch, ecm, ign switch etc) i dont want to start throwing parts at it without knowing whats wrong. Has anyone had similar issues? Thanks in advance, Matt |

I have read somewhere in the forums that the switches tend to short out, not wiring. I have taken mine apart before and there is not much in there, but if it is not lined up right, it won't do what you want. You might need a new switch. Hope this helps. |

I am. I think it was in this website that I read that. I have opened mine up before and all there is inside is a steal bearing, couple contact plates, and a good amount of grease. If you think about doing that, make sure not to destroy the rivets holding the back plate on or make sure you have some new ones. I was not having this problem though. It was something else I thought may have been related to the switch. Good hunting. |
