I got a new muffler. How do I get the old one off? The faring came off easy enough. I see two silver bands wrapping around the muffler, one in front, and one in back, along with where it connects to the header. The front band, I see two screws. One looks like it loosens the band. The other is just above it...maybe holds the bands to the bike? The rear band, I have no idea what screws to loosen up, or even where to find them. The bolt on the header looks easy enough. Do I need to get any sealant (copper sealant/rubber things/???) for the new one? By new, I mean it's a used Buell can, so I have no directions or screws or anything....just what's on the bike now. You pretty much got it figured out. I'll give you the torque sequence for reassembly tomorrow when I get home from work. You might try a search too. But I'll check on ya tomorrow. | ||

okay, so note that the manual says to replace both figure 1 (Torca clamp) and figure 3 (front strap) when installing muffler. Not everyone does, your call. Also some high temp copper sealant isn't a bad idea for reassembly. What I mean't by "torque sequence" is just the recomended order for tightening the new muffler back up. Everything is torqued to a range in either In-lbs or ft-lbs. You'll want a torque wrench that can be set for both. Looks like a 9 right? This means no interactive exhaust, so. One less thing to do. Loosen up figure 1 in your photo (Torca clamp) Loosen up and remove figure 3 (front strap) Loosen up and remove the two rear muffler straps in the second photo. At this point you should be able to wiggle and pry the old muffler down off the header pipe. It'll just fall down so you can cushion it if you don't want it flopping/crashing down. Reassebly is much the reverse. You might find it easier to remove the belt tensionser pulley assembly so you can get at the rear straps easier. I think that it's doable without. It's no big deal if you have to. Just two nuts and washers and it's out of the way. Loosen up #3 in your photo if you haven't yet. It might be helpful to GENTLY open up the muffler inlet a little bit to ease fitting onto the header. Get something, chunks of wood etc that you can use to hold the new muffler up off the floor to help you hold it as your working it on. Put the torca clamp loosely on the new muffler. Get the front strap over the muffler and through the front strap mount. Get the two rear straps so you can slip them over the rear crescent shaped mount and muffler. When you're situated, squirt some of your sealant on the header and you can wiggle and shove the new muffler onto the header pipe. Now you snug up the front strap. Just snug, making sure the muffler is still up on the header good. The front strap will hold it in place. Torque rear straps to 48-60 In-lbs Torque front mount fastener (figure 2) in your photo to 16-18 Ft-lbs by applying force to the head of the bolt, not the nut. Torque the front strap to 108-120 In-lbs, back off two full turns and retighten again to 108-120In-PBS Tighten the torca clamp to 45-50 Ft-lbs Install belt tensionser idler pulley assembly if you removed it with some loctite and torque to 33-35 Ft-lbs. I may have missed plastic, but just recheck. Test, the biggest thing being that everything is tight and no exhaust leaks. If it leaks, it'll blacken up usually at those slots where the muffler goes on the header. Sorry if this is long winded, hope it helps and makes sense. Now I must drink beer. Sticks | ||

Dude, I think I screwed up on what parts I numbered. Your #1 is the front strap mount, #2 is the front strap, #3 is the torca clamp. Forgive me if I called out the wrong numbers, but if you go by the part names you'll be good. Sorry, I'm trying to do this on my iPhone. Any questions, ask. | ||

I think that should do it. I found a picture on the internet on how to undo those rear straps. I'll let you know how it turns out. Thanks!! | ||

Just FYI you can get the rear straps off and on without removing the idler pulley if you use a wobbly extension. |
