I have a 2006 XB12R. The bike is nearly all stock with the exception of the '07 Opened Up Airbox and Buell race air filter. Everything else is stock. Lately, I have noticed the engine would make a sound like something was rattling down below under certain engine loads/RPM's. It did this usually in the top gears. Sometimes I would be in 5th gear, then I would open up the throttle hard to pass and I would hear the "rattling" noise. Sometimes, I would be in 3rd gear then go WOT, the rattling noise would come. It usually happens on hot days after my bike had been running at low speeds. Later, I realized the noise I was hearing was pinging. I used nothing but 91 Octane gas. The bike has fresh spark plugs and clean air filter. It's in great tune. The pinging doesn't happen when the weather is cooler. It just happens on hot days and/or when the bike has been running in stop and go traffic, then after, I ride it hard. IS this normal? Is this something I need to be concerned with? My factory warranty is about to expire in August so I need to know. PLease help. Thanks all. |

Not normal. Not good.(Pinging/pre-ignition can destroy pistons) There is a problem there with the sensors getting too hot and leaning out the fuel mixture. Search the Knowledge Vault for a post by Gunter or Blake. |

With the stock map, filter and exhaust my XB12 would ping on hot days particularly up hills. That is pretty usual for most XB12 bikes in our club, stock or race kitted. We run 98 octane but the rating must be different to the USA. Two Buell riders I know of got new heads under warranty because of pre-detonation issues, but there bikes were pinging much more than normal. |

Have posted elewhere in here about how lean the 12 seems to be under 4000rpm and 50% throttle. Have adjusted mine quite a bit richer with ECMSpy and Megalogger and have no pinging issues at all. |

4000 rpm @ 50% TP is closed loop, so the engine should not run lean there. Regards, Gunter |

Not sure what you mean by that Gunter. |

The engine should not run lean in closed loop. AFR is targeted at 14.7, indenpendently of the map values. |

The ve suggested a much larger injector duration for this area after logging. I have applied those values and the bike is running much better. Should I not have adjusted these or are they just masking another issue? |

Still guesswork and probably much more complicated: The map is set to a value, that the O2 level is outside the target window as set in O2 sensor definitions (lean probably). The fuel is then corrected until the O2 level traversed the target window (now being rich) and now a new cycle starts with inverted signs. So the mixture is floating between rich and lean and in the statistic average will be stoich. EDIT: log of a stock map run open loop: http://www.ecmspy.com/download/gunter/wbol-1.png Max. AFR gaugeable is 16, so mixture might have been leaner than displayed. Regards, Gunter (Message edited by id073897 on June 16, 2008) |

When I had the stock exhaust and map mine would ping on hot days, but only when opening the throttle. Never at a steady speed. Regardless of the revs I would think this was open loop, and it would be using the map. I have a professionally done map with the new system, and I have no pinging, even winding on from lug which is where it was worst. |

Could it be then that the Accel table may need adjustment to stop pinging under these conditions? |
