It's fine. Won't last as long as gear oil, and the viscosity is a little light, but it won't do any immediate damage.
The HD Formula+ is probably the best choice, full synthetic, won't eat stator insulation, and it has additives that resist getting chopped up by gears. |

IMHO, SYN3 20W50 is the oil to run in both the engine and transmission ...
Your air cooled engine gets hot enough to thin out the oil for good shifting and change it every 5K miles ...
Have 111,819.6 miles on my 1997 S3T as of the last ride and it works for me !!! |

It's no coincidence that the year that they lowered the clutch spring force AND went to helical gears in the tranny is also the year that they introduced Formula+.
I'm not religious about engine oil brand, but for the primary, I'll only run Formula+. The fluid in that cavity has some interesting and conflicting requirements. Formula+ meets those requirements better than anything else. Clutch slip can be a real issue with 06 and later XB12 models with many other fluids.

How do you know this? Just spent 22 minutes on the phone with HD Home office CS and was told they will not divulge the WT or API GL/CL category (Dino or Synth) information as it is perpietary info.
If you have the skinny, than what APL GL Cat and weight is it?

If you use H-D oil, all those WT, API, GL, and CL, whether DINO or SYN3 are all taken care of for you !!!

You can smell the additives in it. I thought when it was announced it was announced as full synthetic.
That being said, given it doesn't see the kind of stupid high temps engine oil sees cooling an exhaust valve, it may not really matter if it is full synthetic or not. |

I doubt it is a full synthetic.
But not only does in not see the engine oil temps, it doesn't have the combustion byproduct gasses bubbling through it, so it doesn't get the same chemical attack that the engine oil does. So it really isn't a big deal that it isn't a full synthetic. It's still the best stuff to use in that cavity, especially on 06 and later XB models.

Hey AL... do you or anyone else here know the Weight, API GL CAT and VI of Formula +??
As I recollect API's parameters, they indicate that all lubes cert'd by them must indicate this information on the bottle and be openly advertised and accessible. Otherwise it is not certified by them.
Pretty suspicious that HD does not want anyone to know this very basic information that will not threaten their supposed "Secret" formula.

Sorry, I don't buy that. Erik doesn't even use this stuff nor did he in his race rigs when he was still with HD. Again, verifying my suspensions.
