8500 miles on 03 xb9s, mobil 1 15w50 is all that has ever been in it since the 500 mile oil change. i recently considered trying the mobil 1 v-twin 20w50, but decided to just keep what has been working perfectly! | ||

I've used Mobil One (for cars) in the past in my Buells with no issues, but have recently decided to follow some of the advice I've picked up on other forums. I have long used Shell Rotella T synth in my diesel F250, and I've heard that it is good for bikes also, because it doesn't contain some of the additives that regular car oil does. Anybody else know anything about Rotella T? | ||

I've used Shell Rotella 5w-40 syn in my GL1800 and Burgman 650 and I did use it in my ST1300. None of these bikes recommend 5w but I participate in bulletin boards for each of these bikes and many people are using it with no issues. Note: I've been riding for 47 years and I have NEVER met anyone who has had an oil related issue because of the oil they selected. I would stay away from auto oils though. I don't think I'll use it in my XB9SX. I'll probably use Mobil 1 V-twin or Amsoil 20w-50 in it. | ||

I've been running Mobile 1 15w50 oil in my Buells for years. I know a lot of other people do as well. The owners manual is vague about exactly what oil you can use in the bikes. Obviously they want to encourage you to use HD oil, so they aren't motivated to help you select a different brand. They do say to use an oil that is Diesel certified and meets (I believe) an SG certification. Looking on the back of the mobile 1 container, I see mention of neither diesel engines nor SG. Does Mobil 1 (auto) meet the specs required for use in these bikes? Surely it must? | ||

The letter "S" followed by another letter (for example, SM) refers to oil suitable for gasoline engines. The letter "C" followed by another letter and/or number (for example, CI-4) refers to oil suitable for diesel engines. These letters officially stand for "Service" and "Commercial." I ran castrol 5w50 full synthetic, and my 9sx consumed it at a fairly alarming rate (though it ran great and wasn't fouling plugs). Switching back to 20w50 stopped the oil consumption. FWIW. | ||

Well, since 1992 I've been running Mobil 1 in everything I own, including my lawn mower. I used to drag race, tearing my car and bike down after every season to replace bearings, etc. A guy I worked with at the time convinced me to start running synthetic in an 11.5 second (Colorado at 5000 ft) Pontiac 400 small block, and I never changed bearings or seals again. Running anything but 20w50 (non-synth) at that time in a 1/4 mile car/bike was considered absurd. I've been amazed at synthetic performance ever since, and have put Mobil 1 15w50 in my XB9R since I bought it (bought used at 4k, 13k now), and it runs and shifts like a dream. Yes, I use 15w50 in the primary and crankcase. I really don't think you can go wrong with synthetic of any type. I change my car and bike every 5k, and have done so for quite some time. I had a V-Max that I bought new, and sold with 65k, She ran perfect, and never used a drop of oil. I drip the stuff on my bicycle's cables, lube my pool pump's shaft with it, rub it on random door hinges, everything but myself or my wife (other companies make better lube for those types of activities). I've got gasoline-powered yard equipment old as dirt that still starts at the first pull. Just put it in...you'll be fine. (Message edited by mustangame2 on November 14, 2009) | ||

In my water cooled 1125 I see no reason at all for not being able to run the Mobil 1 15W-50. I use the V-Twin 20W-50 in my air cooled Road King and have been thinking I should switch that to the 15W-50 too. The V-Twin stuff is rather expensive while the 15W-20 is cheap from Wal-Mart. They both exceed what the manufacturer recommends so why not? I have been riding for 41 years now (my God... 41 years...) and have used Mobil 1 since it came on the market. I too have never seen an oil related failure on a street bike. I firmly believe that any quality oil (that is changed when it should be) will provide good service. My confidence is in Mobil 1. | ||

Made the switch over the holiday to 15w50 and so far it's great. Seems agreeable with the Uly (@24k miles). In the first week it runs smoother and seems quieter...almost feels like a different bike. Anyone else using it in the primary? Anyone using it in the primary and have issues? | ||

been using 15w-50 in my Harley it has 110,000 miles on it and still runs purfect. I put it ( mobil 1 ) in everything I own 2 S3t's,2 S3's, 68 triumph lawn mower and any that uses oil. great stuff | ||

Anyone remember when API "S" and "C" ratings stood for "Spark Ignition" and "Compression Ignition"... kind of like how you no longer see truck hauling placards that read "cryogenic" because people thought they were driving "carcinogens" (cancer causers) in their neighborhoods... LOL |
