ok I've been brainstorming a lot lately, trying to think of somehow to get rid of the huge "breadbox, suitcase, etc" whatever you want to call it.. the airbox on the right side of the X1. I like the looks of the scoop on the left side which directs air across the rear head, and I DO NOT want to remove the pieces and go with a hypercharger or something similar. I would like to find a duplicate of the left side scoop, that would fit on the right side. It would need to be a mirror image of course, and I haven't looked closely enough to see if the two pieces mount in the same places. I already have spare plastics on the way to play around with and get ideas. Anyway, my question is: does anyone make something like this? I've looked far and wide for something similar and the only thing I've found are the carbon fiber inserts that clean up the lines under the tank cover after the airbox covers are removed. I know someone will suggest I just remove the plastics, but I think of them as cheap protection for my tank cover in case of an accident. Also I press my knees into them a lot when I ride, and wouldn't want to give that up. |

I don't neccessarily mind the airbox looks, it flows well with the tank and covers a good deal of ugly - the throttle body. As an airbox the design leaves much to be desired, so I replaced the aircleaner assy with the billet oval from American Sport Bike. I gutted and removed much of the interior material of the cover, trimmed the rear portion to fit around the billet cover and then cut an oval in the back half to allow the cleaner to breath. The front portion of the cover in intact, I cut along the swooping line that continues down from the tank. The front blocks rain and debris from entering the filter and looks pretty good. I'll post pics when I can. I want to smooth and paint the plastic as I used a spare cover that was scratched up. Anyone have any tips on spraying the plastic parts? Flex additives required etc? |

I painted both scoop and air box and they came out rather nice. A good sanding, with some liberal primer, sand again, then painted and cleared over. |
