I thought I had see this somewhere in this section, but I couldn't find it again. Anyhow, I read somewhere that the service book procedure for setting rear belt tension was wrong and dangerous. So in a step by step procedure, what is the correct way to do this? thanks |

What debate? Upwards vertical slack at midspan of bottom run of belt (transmission in neutral, rear suspension fully unloaded) should be between 1.5" and 1.75". The belt actually tightens as it heats up, on account of it thickens more than elongates due to heat. I run mine at 1.75". Before installing the new version Uly belt, I ran it even looser. The new version belt seems to stretch a bit more and so needs to be a bit tighter else it will skip a tooth under hard acceleration in 1st gear. Not sure, but I think the owner's manual calls for 1.25"-1.50". The 1.5" should be fine too if you are certain that you are adjusting at the tight spot. |

From memory (the M2 has been gone for a while now), I just sat on the bike to get the suspension loaded, reached down, and pulled up the bottom (I think) run of the belt. My goal was to get it to just get tight at the same point it would just touch the swingarm. That worked better then trying to follow the rules in my 00 M2 service manual, which I think cost me a 5th gear drive assembly (note, I am not saying I didn't screw something up trying to follow the process in the manual... I am just saying that when I *did* try and follow it, I know my belt ended up way too tight. I can still clearly remember the feeling of bottoming out the suspension in a big dip and feeling that belt bind up the swingarm... it probably cracked my 5th gear assembly bearing cage at that same moment...) |
