Kind of an emergency question here--has anybody installed Russell braided oil lines on a Zipper's pump?

I'm in the middle of the job on my '96 S-1, and it looks like I'm gonna have a clearance problem between the pump body, the cam cover and the threaded coupler on the braided line.

This is a good excuse to cut down the cam cover and gain clearance on the outboard side, but I'd be unhappy if I did that job (which means pulling the exhaust and popping the rocker boxes to loosen up the pushrods, then cutting and dressing the cam cover)and I still had a clearance problem on the inboard (pump) side of the coupler.

Any experience out there to ease me through this?

Thanks!

r-t I had no problem getting them onto the stock pump with the cam cover stock but I guess this doesn't help your situation.

RT:

What are you doing with that pump? I've never seen one. They are somewhat of a mystery part. Hear they are the coolest thing on earth for a Buell, with 3 separate pumping stages, rumor has it it really does up the sump and uses .2 HP less to turn for a grand total of .8 HP gain.

If you have fitting issues mill out a clearance from the fake portions of the gear case.

Thanks, gents, I pulled the cam cover off last night, and found that Zipper has thoughtfully milled a clearance groove in the pump body for me! I'm gonna cut the cover down anyway, just for style. I guess I could've pulled the pump more easily, but I want everybody to be able to see my nifty braided lines!

Rocket: If you were able to change oil lines with the cam cover and oil pump in place, then your fingers are a lot skinnier than mine!

Jose: I don't know how special it is, looks like a stock pump, maybe a little beefier, but not much, has the right number of hoses and everything. It was on the bike when I bought it. Of course I bought it from the counterman at a local independent shop that specializes in drag racing. Previous owner told me he'd worked the heads, put in Big Twin valves, close ratio gear set and a windage tray in addition to the Zipper's pump under discussion. When I pulled the rocker boxes last night, I discovered Jim's rockers and adjustable pushrods, too! No wonder the damn thing runs so good...

Incidentally, I can't discern any wear on the oil pump drive gears at +/-14,000 miles.

Wonder if that was the stock drive gear. Was it bronze?

My drive gear was in trouble (but holding) at 14k.

Reep, I'll look at it tonight, maybe post a picture if I can remember.

It was a pain in the arse doing it in situ and my fat fingers didn't help but it worked!

The worse part of the job was getting the return line to fit the barb on the Metmachex oil tank. In the end I cut the barb off the stock Buell fitting, ditto the Metmachex barb on their supplied banjo bolt, then brazed the Buell barb end onto the banjo bolt. Worked a treat too.

Reep: Here's a shot of the drive gear. Not bronze, unless I have a very special magnet in my tool box! The driven gear on the pump is also magnetic and thus not bronze.

Funny, I can see wear in the picture that I couldn't see with my naked eye. Still, it looks like a reasonable wear pattern to me, and the teeth are nice & thick. I'm gonna run it for another 14,000 and see what happens!

That looks like the original all right. Mine looked just a little worse then that at 15k... but not a ton worse. I chickened out and replaced it. It was a lot of work. I only asked because it sounds like you have a lot of other zippers parts in that engine, and I believe zippers used to make a replacement bronze drive gear.

Where you are now, you are only $15 and 10 minutes away from a new part, why not replace it?

(But first tell me how to keep my sprocket seal from popping!)

Good point, Reep, this would be a lot of work to repeat for a $15 gear!
