1st off Im not bashing American Sport bike at all, now that i got that out of the way..... I bought a belt upgrade kit for my 03 xb9s and the inside edge of the belt started to fray any one else have this problem? Something i missed? Thanks for the help |

Got a picture? On some bikes, the belt will justify inward, on others, outward. I'd guess it has to do with the alignments between the axle, swingarm pivot, main tranny output shaft, and idler pulley axle. The only time I've seen it real bad was when a bike had had a low side and had tweaked the idler pulley bracket subtly, which caused a lot of belt walk. I've heard of a another that had bad belt walk that was attributed to a slightly bent swingarm, again from a low side. The edge of the cord will fray some if it is rubbing on the inside or outside edge. Unless its digging in hard on either side, it isn't really that big a deal. But if it is rubbing a lot, I'd find which of the above shafts is causing the belt walk. Al |

I've upgraded my '03 XB's belt drive system using Al's kit, with excellent results. The parts are Buell OE after all, so fit & performance should not be suspect. One thing to check with the '03s: did you remove the inner belt guard plate that surrounds drive pulley? |

No I didnt but when i look at it while installed it appears to have plenty of room unless its happening when i took a passenger along |

should i be worried about a grove at the edge of the belt? Will it cause it to snap even if its just the edge ground down? |

Al mentions in the kit description on American Sport Bike some possible interference between the '03 rear brake master and the belt/pulley upgrades. I'd forgotten about this since installing the kit, and have kept the old brake components. My belt shows no evidence of edge wear, possible/probably because (1) along with drive kit, I installed custom rear shock with beefy spring for my beefier self; and (2) I don't ride 2up on the XB. |

What is not clear to me in the pix is there looks to be a space between the belt and the sprocket flange that is filled with fuzz fibers. Is there a gap in there we're looking at or is the belt butted against the sprocket flange and the upper part of the belt is abraded away leaving the cord fabric fuzzed out? According to the smaller pic, the belt looks to be hanging off the wheel sprocket to the right. If this is the case, perhaps a pic showing the inner diameter part of the belt "hanging ten" off the sprocket might put the problem in persective? Are you running all the stock belt guards? If so, I've R&R'd the belt on my '03 a few times and had minor readjustment sessions aligning the belt guards upon installation. The one that always gave me trouble was the front belt guard, the thin metal one. Make sure that it fits flush, is not bent in the slightest and, upon final installation, the wheel turns freely with absolutely no rubbing noise coming from the belt. |

the belt is flush against the sprocket flange. Under the fuzz there is still rubber from the lower half of the belt. it is just the top edge of the belt that has sheared/ rubbed away. I took off the thin metal guard from the front and ground down the lip that might have caused this. the the main question that i have that has not really been answered yet is, has anyone had an 06 belt just shear off like this on its own and should I be worried about it snapping?
