Heres a few shots looking up through the oil pump mounting hole,looking up at the drive gear mounted on the crank.Seems it can wear badly, and break up causing a lot of expensive damage. In the photo's can be seen Deep in the base of these helical gears , a silver line. thats the bit that's worn off.I will check it agian in 15000 miles and probably change it then if the silver line has got wider. Might be worth taking a look at yours ,if you have ,like my M2 , got 25000miles on the clock Cheers Lee

Thats nothing, you have a good one. I don't think you have anything to worry about if its wearing that well after 25k miles. Whitebuell pretty much proved this was an issue with the case machining and how the oil pump lines up with the pinion gear. So I suspect that if you are only a "little" out of alignment, you wear up to a certain point quickly, and the wear pretty much stops. So the people that need to worry are the ones where the alignment is so far off that the "done wearing" point is worse then the "breaking teeth" point. You also want to rotate the engine, the gear can be worn on one side and not that worn on the other. It's an easy check if you are already changing the oil anyway. Probably silly not to do it at 10k or 15k on any aircooled Buell with the older (pre 2008) oil pump setup. |

That looks pretty good compared to the one I just replaced at 50K... Mine was worn down so the teeth were sharp. Over 85% I'd say. I doubt I would have made another 2K miles. |

I have replaced the bronze gear at 27.000km. There was no real wear on the gear, but I had the part so I did it anyway. Now I am sure the bronze gear will get to 40.000-50.000km, no problem |

I'm kicking myself for not replacing mine this winter. I had the headers off and engine rotated to fix a sheared exhaust stud... all I had to do was get the part and pull the rocker boxes. I was already deep into a time consuming job and wanted to get it done... but c'mon, it was the middle of winter. Why rush? Oh well. Rotating the engine went a lot easier then I expected the first time, it'll be even faster if I do it again. I'll drop the oil pump again and see how much its worn, and see if it has stabilized. And I should really replace my fork oil as well... :/ |
