Reep,

I would keep the "spring rubber band" part of the seal in the primary/low pressure side. But this also depends on which seal P/N you are using. The older seal that has the metal outer ring puts the spring ring towards the primary. If you have the newer all rubber seal, then there (if memory serves correctly) is a spring band on either side, a small ring on the inner part and a large ring on the opposite side for the outer seat. When I helped Jose Quinones do his, we put the large seat ring on the inner/crankase side and the smaller ring on the outer/primary side.

Also, I just replaced mine with the older metal type, and I just put it flush with the edge of the seat area, not recessed some. That is the way the factory seal was installed.

Reep; shoot me a mail with your address if you want me to send you the tool (one of the few things I can actually find these days : )). I can get in the mail tomorrow if you want/need it.

Thanks Henrik, but I got it in tonight with part of a tinker toy (don't tell my kids). It seemed to work well, time will tell.

Threes a charm. If it leaks again, I will either drop you a note and get your tool, or trade the Cyclone in on a 9sx.

Funny, my wife asks me the same thing when I am in the can... "are you playing with your tinker toy again?"

lol

anyone know how much the updated crank seal should stand proud of the case. I think I may have used a little too much pressure when seating the seal after it blew because the vent is starting to spit a little oil after about 4000mi or so.

I paid the $27 for the special tool but I could not justify the $70 they wanted for the handle so I cut a piece of black pipe and used the crank nut to press it down. Now I wonder if I pressed it in too deep.

That sounds very much like what mine did when I seated mine too deeply. The ball bearings rub on the rubber and eventually cut through the seal.

I believe the factory manual gives a pretty good picture of the tool with measurements.\

It might just be overfilled as well... I wonder if you could tie a balloon over the tranny vent and look for leakage while the engine is running?

Patrick; no expert, but AFAIR, the tool - as it is pressed down - seats itself on the main shaft (or some other immovable object). So I doubt you would have pressed the seal in too far. I did exactly what you did; bought the tool and used the nut and a short section of black pipe to press the seal in.

I don't remember the "special tool" seating on anything but the bit of cut pipe?! But I used it a while ago.

I am very careful about filling the primary, I use a graduated cylinder when changing out the fluid.

Because my bike is a 99' the picture in the manual is of the "old style" seal.

Henrik,
You are correct sir! The insertion tool cannot be overtightened as the inside lip hits the crank when it's at the correct depth.
I did mine the same way (with your tool, Thanks again!) and have no problems.

BTW, is it available again? I've got my primary apart on the S2 to replace the stator.
Might be a good time to replace the seal.

Patrick, maybe you did not seat it far enough?

From my recollection, the seal does not stand proud of the case at all and is in fact inset by some noticable distance. Maybe 2 or 3 dimes thickness if I recall correctly.

I would check my calibrated green tinker toy, but my son Jack found it in the toolbox and reclaimed it. Last time I saw it, he was trying to pound it into a 2x4, and making much better progress then I would have thought possible. Resourceful little guy...

Henrik,
Could you snap and post a pic of that tool?
Thanks.
If not then maybe Brad can when he gets it.

Once upon a time, I built my own tool for doing this based on dimensions that I think Henrik had written in a location that he linked to earlier in this thread. Unfortunately, that link is now dead. I lent my tool to someone who never returned it and has now lost it...Grrrrrr...

Does anyone have the dimensions for the tool?

Thanks
Al

Al, I used the Web Archive and found something that may help. It is not complete, but it is part of the link Henrik posted on the previous page. Perhaps it has enough information for you to figure it out:
