I have a 99 X1 that has been riding really rough. I have changed the plugs and the fuel filter. I have a new pump since that died not to long ago, and recently had a half broken front isolator mount (see another section in "Engine" for that saga). It sounds like I am not getting spark very consistantly so I just checked the coil. Resistance on the connector pins reads just a little higher than the service manual said it should. The plug wire terminals are reading the big overload. Here is my question, if I have a bad coil, how in the world is this thing firing? I have been working with electronics for some time now, and if a transformer, which this thing basicly is, opens a winding it stops working. Any input on this would be great. Thanks. |

Ed You have two coils in a molded fixture and you could have a break that is intermittent. When cold good or near good impedance readings, warm or vibrating spotty connection, do you have access to a TDR? Joe |

Joe, I hear you on the temperature/vibration thing. That is what I was thinking. As for your question, TDR? Not sure what what that is, or at least I am not familiar with the abbreviation. Thanks. Ed |

Does anyone have the part number for the ignition coil for a 99 X1? |

Ed Time domain reflectometer. Check with the ET's they might have one. Used to find breaks in cables and connections. Joe |

Ed Are you losing a cylinder? One cooler than the other? Part number for 99 S3 coil is 31639-99. Should be the same. Joe (Message edited by bad_karma on January 23, 2008) |

Joe, I don't think so, but I am not sure. I have, with the back of my hand, felt for heat and it seemed the same. I am going with the coil itself is bad based off my resistance checks. Hopefully this will work. |

The pain is gone and I am back on the road. After paying $1000 at the local, and only, Buell dealer on Oahu, I have a bike that will get me around. What does suck though is I have no real idea what they did to fix my problem. I know I have a new O2 and Cam sensor. Everything else is PFM, pure "F"ing magic. Thanks to all that helped me along this glorious journey. |

Ed Glad you are back on the road. It would have been nice to know what they did that actually fixed it. I know in port time is at a premium but a Manufactures Service manual is where you need to be. Thanks for all the underway time hope you get a chance to shoot something down/sink. Joe |
