I believe that it was all ones that came with the Thunderstorm heads, but I'm not 100% sure. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong. (Message edited by puddlepirate on December 29, 2007) |

S1s did too. I'm pretty sure it was only the S2 that didn't. |

The Thunderstorm engines (starting in 1998 with S1W and S3t) were the first with the lower mass flywheels. In 2000 they were lightened again with the switch to the press together crank assembly. S2's and S1's had stock Sportster flywheels. |

Sorry, Matty, but you're wrong. The 97 S1 had lightened flywheels. And I'm fairly sure that the press-together flywheels were more a manufacturing issue than a weight issue. |

in 2000 the crank was made 14% lighter, the XB,s got even lighter cranks, |

Oops, the old memory's getting rusty - Checked my '96/'97 parts books! S2's have XL cranks and a lighter flywheel came with the intro of the S1 in '96. I need to check if the '98 assembly is different still. |

I just got pics today. S1 Flywheel vs '00 style:
I was thinking of getting an S&S knife-edged set, but I couldn't even get a price quote from 'em. They're a bit odd, too...pressed on one side and bolted/welded on the other. I was pleasantly surprised with the newer Buell flywheels. A crank scraper is going in with it. |

M-2's also had Sporty/XL full weight flywheels. |

2000-2002 M2's have the same lightened crank wheels as the 2000-2002 X1 and S3. |

The 14% weight difference has a far greater effect on inertia and response than the simple proportion of weights. The greatest loss (as shown) is the width of the rim at the OD, which due to its location (about 3.94" from the shaft center) each gram of weight is roughly equal to 16 grams removed from the mid-way point (1.97" to shaft center). |

Medic 352 are you sure on the M2's that is about the heavier flywheels? mine is a 98, and I did have it completly down two years ago, and I do believe the crank was the one in picture #one on this thread? |

That's incorrect. I weighed my '96 vs new style flywheel. I don't remember exactly but it was around a 1 lb difference. The way the mass is distributed is completely different, however. |

I have a 2002 Buell X1W. It needs a new flywheel. Anyone know if I can use one off a newer Sportster? |

Are these all interchangable? Aka... Can I put the lightest XB flywheel into my 97 s1 lightning? (Message edited by Foximus on October 11, 2010) |

I have put a 96 sporty flywheel in my 02 X1. BUT this might be a problem.. It seams that when i started this up i makes noises from the valve train OR something else.. i checked the cams - OK, checked the rods (3 pink on exhaust) - OK so i am in need of help here... could it just be the timing is off? When all the cams lines up, the timing "dot" on the crank is on the one dot, that is 20 degree BTDC or35 (can remember now) is that correct? or should the cams line up on TDC? |
