Well I just bought a 2005 XB12Scg and the owner said that it needed an oil change and that all the others have been done by the Buell dealer in the past. I went to NAPA and got four quarts of Amsoil 20W-50 Motorcycle oil and a NAPA "Gold" oil filter. I tried to get a factory one but no one within 200 miles had one. Also, I have used the NAPA Gold filters on everything I've ever owned and they are awesome. Anyways, changing the oil was messy, especially filling up the swingarm using a normal funnel. The bike took almost 4 whole quarts(I thought it would only take 3.5. The bike seems to run a little bit better, but the biggest difference was the shift from neutral to first, it is much smoother and not so clunky. The rest of the gears shift better too. I'm changing the plugs today and suspect that they will make the bike run much better. | ||

Whoa man! Did you say you put 4 quarts of oil in? I have an 06' XB9SX and the oil capacity is 2.5 quarts. I suspect that your bike is about the same. 4 quarts would be a major overfill and your airbox is going to get a bunch of oil spit into it from the breather tubes. I would drain some of the oil asap. | ||

Hi is likely including the transmission/primary in that total, thus the 3.5 quart expectation. I don't think you could stuff 4 quarts into the engine lubrication system even if you wanted to do so. And the bike certainly wouldn't run well afterwards, unless you consider an oil fountain desirable.  I'm going to try to get clarification on the engine oil capacity discrepancy issue; it is prevalent. My view is that 2.5 quarts is plenty of oil for the engine, and that in order to diminish oil consumption it is better to adhere to the specified quantity versus what the dipstick says, but I could be wrong. | ||

Yes, this includes the oil I put in the engine, tranny, and oil filter. Total it came out to about 3.75 quarts to get the oil to the full mark on the dipstick when warm. I also did spill some when trying to fill the swingarm using the normal funnel. I'm guessing I lost 2-4oz. there. |
