My 02' X1 blows oil inside the airbox now. If I was to upgrade to a forcewinder or something equivalent would the oil still do that or would it stop. thanks |

Even with the stock intake, if you route the crankcase breather exhaust out from the intake, the oil won't get into the airbox. But it may still accumulate to some degree although usually to a lesser extent without the vacuum assist that it gets in the intake. Better to address the root cause rather than the symptom. Suggest you have your engine checked for compression and leak-down to see if your rings and valve seals are performing up to spec. If that is what is causing the excessive oiling in your intake, they are relatively easy issues to correct. If your compression and leak-down are okay, then ensure that you are only filling the oil reservoir with the specified amount of oil. Don't trust the dipstick on that account. Put in the specified 2.0 quarts after draining the system, yes including changing the oil filter, then run the bike until the engine is hot, shut it down and immediately check the oil level with the bike sitting upright and on level ground and note where the oil level registers on your dipstick. Check it two or three times to ensure you are seeing the same/correct level. Use that as your maximum "full" mark. Don't ever let the level exceed that mark. Only check the oil level on a warmed-up engine with the bike upright on level ground and only immediately after shutting the engine down. |

When you change your oil, be sure to fully warm up the engine and then commence draining the oil immediately after shutting down the engine. |

If they are not is that expensive to have fixed or is it something I can do myself with the service manual. I want to put on an after market intake but I wasn't sure weather oil would then be blowing all over my leg while riding or what. thanks |

Try this... it worked for my 2000 M2 and was basically free. Get a longer filter for a Dyna at a Harley dealer. It fits a Buell tuber just like the stock filter, but is longer and holds about 1/2 quart more. Let the oil level in the oil bag (the plastic reservoir under the seat - Buell calls it a 'bag' for some reason) down to where it just touches the bottom of the diptstick. Monitor the oil level a little more than you normally would for a few hundred miles and see if that doesn't change the amount of oil blowing into the airbox. There is also water vapor being blown by the engine - this will not change, so make sure you're not confusing water for oil. I did this after years of having spooge blow out into my catch-can and what I thought was high oil consumption. Now, at 40,000 miles, I hardly have to add any oil to it and just get mainly water out of my catch can and about a teaspoon of spooge every two tanks of gas. Try this... it's free! |
