Thanks

First, are you absolutely positively sure the leak is originating from the pushrod tube? Could it be running down the backside of the tube and actually be originating at the rockerbox gasket?

If you are sure of the origination of the leak, you don't need to pull the top end (cylinders on up), just the rocker box. If you have access to a vacuum pump you could try squeezing some RTV clear silicon adhesive around the leaky spot while pulling a vacuum through the breather or timing ports. I've heard of guys doing that to seal up leaking/weeping cases. You'd want to really clean around the leak using a good high pressure contact cleaner. Then let it dry, some air time with a hair dryer wouldn't hurt.

Warning, the above is just a wild idea. If it were me, I'd remove the rocker box.

I just replaced the base gasket of that cylinder and during reassembly had trouble getting the pushrod tubes correct. You can see little dropplets of oil around the tube when you start it.

I'd hate to yank it all apart again, (all 3 rockerbox plates come out) but whatever works.

Josh,
It will be tight, but try twisting the tube. Sometimes you can get them to seal a bit better.

Can someone explain what the clamp at the bottom does? How does it hold the tube? Is it locktighted on? (I haven't had the nerve to put enough power in to remove one of the bolts yet)

Not having this thing running in several months, I forgot how loud my 4"dia 3"outlet Stainless Specialties muffler is. I should probably apologize to my neighbors since I ran it up and down the street at 1am last night (as soon as it was all back together).

There is a tapered seal under the clamp. It compresses around the tube, and against the case, to seal it when you tighten the bolt.
Do not be afraid to undo it. :) It'll just be a little oily.

John,
Can you please share your advice here? Others will likely benefit too. :)

John's advice: First, prank call the person installing the seals ;)

Well with Peter's seal explanation and John's instructions I got it fixed. What I needed to do was seat the tube properly in the seal.

It took a 1/4" hex socket, universal joint, 12" extension and impact wrench but I got both bolts out with just a little trouble.

I then carefully pulled the seal up around the tube (I had smashed it under during installation) and followed John's advice in reassembly.

Anyway, the last time I did a head I just pushed the tubes back into the holder and it worked fine. Which was just dumb luck and I didn't learn anything. Now I know what to do next time.

S1 seems fine, except it won't idle, which will be a topic for another day.

Thanks for the help guys.

Josh,
Sure sounds like leaking intake gaskets. It sounds like it's running lean and therfore requires the choke.

SteveH, that's what I thought so I pulled the carb and intake (all new seals) back off, chanted over it in Elvish and reinstalled. Ran the same so I rode it 18miles to my local wrench. At which point he asked what the problem was as he adjusted the idle.

I guessing bad gas, tho I don't think it was in there more than 5 months.

Let a buddy ride it this afternoon. He has a half race-kitted 97 S1. First words off the bike were "we need to talk about heads"
