Past 3000miles. Every once and a while is get a quick fart/hiccup out of the engine. Kinda like a baby back backfire and a check engine light comes on for a second or two. Then it goes away. And no more problems. Checked the code, #53 = Bad ECM. Today i get a hiccup and bike dies. light on and off for next the mile or so I have to get home. Not like in the past where it comes and goes. Up for a while then nothing. Seems ok right now. Checked Battery, good Looked for bare wires, did find anything yet. Is my ECM bad? or does this intermittent trouble code make it appear to be a electrical issue outside of ECM. Im thinking the if the ECM were bad it would just go out or show a check engine constantly. Any advice. |

I have a stock ECM. Will It be too lean If I put that in with the race pipe? (Until I get a new race ECM.) Or is the ECM really the problem? |

It only has this problem every once a while, today was the worst. Going to Buelltoberfest, If I cant get it "fixed/Figured out" by then, do think its OK to ride it with little hiccups and brain farts happing every once and a while? |

Check all the connections going to the ECM. If you have the stock I don't think it will hurt it. Try it and if it pings, then it might not be such a good idea. |

Error code 53 = ROM failure. That's internal to the computer. I had a whole post prepared for troubleshooting the power leads to the ECM, but then I looked it up and this changes things. What it is probably trying to say is that the hardware doesn't work for the intended function. In other words, whatever functions are supposed to work because of the ROM (Read Only Memory), they are not working now for whatever reason. The sad part is the FSM says the only fix is to replace the ECM; it's toast. The only consolation I can think of is to verify that all the ECM power pins have the proper voltage and likewise with the ground pins. Also make sure that the pins themselves are in good condition -- no corrosion or bent pins. You do have the factory service manual, I take it, to help identifying the pins? On the other hand, try the stock ECM, and if it doesn't throw the same code, -- that'll pretty much isolate the problem to the race ECM and, well, you'll know what to do. -- but, if you still get #53, then take a long hard look at the wires in that wire harness. |
