getting manual asap. but just bought 2003 lightning. gas low light on. only got one key with bike. (ignition) is this the same key for gas cap lock? it does not work/turn/open. is this a normal problem? any suggestions? it needs a lot. fluid changes, front and rear tires, but for right now it needs gas. |

Yes, the keys should be the same. So somebody must have replaced one or the other. There are probably some numbers somewhere on the gas cap you can pull and take to your Buell dealer, and they can order you a set of the right pre-made keys. You or a lock smith might be able to pick it as well. It's sometimes easier then you think, though I never tried it on that particular lock. I wouldn't drill it though. An awful lot of things could go really badly in that scenario. |

lol.Hey Reepicheep. thanks for the answer. single key makes sense. as non-maintance as this bike has seen doubt if they changed it out. thinking its just jammed up. bike has tire down to past bare. how anyone would ride it that far gone is beyond me. yeah, drilling into a gas tank/frame is not an option. i bought it in calif at elcamino swap meet. owner was absent. seller knew nothing of bike. neither do i. need manual soonest but am out in middle of desert. fluids to be changed, high beam is not working, all sorts of stuff wrong. |

Sometimes it takes a mighty effort to turn the key in the gas cap. Just when you think the key will twist in half, the lock will turn and the gas cap comes off. Another trick I've done that seems to help when it gets stuck is to put a couple or three drops of diesel fuel in the key slot and let is soak down to where the tabs are on the lock mechanism. The oily stuff kinda lubes things in there a little. Did you buy the yellow bike? Heh, heh, yeah, I was there. In the rain. Under people's canopies. But there were a lot of nice oldies in the show area that made it worth going. |

I bought an 85 KLR 250... so I know what you mean. I have been working my way through quite the grocery list of things to fix up... Makes for a fun hobby, and at the end of the day it can get a smoking good deal. Beats watching television... |

Yea I've had mine stick a few times. If you use liquid graphite for locks or just about any lite lube it should fix it. I've also had the (twist tab and pull) part stick also so lube that as well. |

...yep. the "not crashed" yellow bike. i checked it over pretty well. frame and cases and running gear. give away is title says 11k miles and odometer said 7 k. took off lights to replace bulb and fix bad rattle. they replaced parts with no class at all. bolts missing, no rubber grommets. thing rattled like crazy from front. some cracked brackets i will take care of. price was right and motor is sound. i squirted some gun/machine oil in gas cap today. at the point of stopping cause key had a bending breaking off feel it came out. cleaned out gunk around lip. oiled well. it is fine. a little stiff. but working. took it for a ride. it is faster than my 80 inch stroked ported cammed ironhead after 60 mph. extra gear will really help top end. it is easy to see how people crash these often. its tight steering and way too good front brake. will get tires on line. i see lots of good reviews on the parelli. also good milage from the michlen road pilot "v"... looking for milage. getting 17k out of my superglide. would like to see 10k out of this. will get both front and rear. hints? oil filter is not at any close dealer. will call on that and low beam bulb and change fluids. have mobil 15-50 i use in other bikes. figguring it will work here unless you all have a hint. i run sprectrol harley heavy oil in my ironhead because it has belt primary and detergent makes belt delaminate. suggestions for trany/primary oil? no manual yet so any tips will be really appreciated. thanks guys harley wanted $28 for head light bulb and had to pre pay (40 mile drive one way) and order and get in a week. standard harley. i went to napa. in stock. $13. also wix oil filter. did oil changes, tighten up things, wash all that. tires a must next.... |

oh yeah, thanks again all. i will no doubt be asking other stuff. by the way, this buell isnt my first bike. here is my 1974 ironhead. bought it new. around 1976 i did major motor work, then added some stuff from my flattracker. its a fun bike. still owne it. that is a recent pix. also have a 03 superglide and about a zillion dirt bikes in collection. have owned 6 other harleys and wish i had kept every one of them...
