Hello all, Does my voltage regulator ground on my 98 thunderbolt look OK? What is the green wire? Should it be exposed like that? What is inside the threaded tube to the immediate right of the green wire? The red wire? My manual does not say anything about the ground in the install/removal instructions, but I know to secure it to the back of the regulator on install. I will be bolting on a Crane regulator in lieu of the stock one. Thanks!

Chris I think the green wire is for the oil pressure sending unit. Don't have my manual so you might want check with a manual. Joe |

According to my manual which is an 01 M2 Cyclone manual the wire from the oil pressure sending unit is Gr/Y [green with a yellow stripe]. And no it shouldn't be exposed like that. You've got a broken wire. On Harleys and Buells the voltage regulator is supposed to be grounded through the frame or their mounting bracket. It's always a good idea to put a star washer between the frame or the mounting bracket and the regulator for positive grounding. Also there's a hole in the bottom of the regular which is to be tapped with a 1/4-20 bottoming tap [you can also use a self tapping screw]. It's not a bad idea to tap it out and put an additional ground [use star washers on both terminals]for backup. Also use a 12 gauge wire since that's what goes to your battery from the regulator and solder those terminals [no crimps]! KK |

Kdkerr and all, Where does the green/yellow wire go into the the oil pressure switch? Do you take the top off? My manual is hazy on this. Also, what type of connector is used to secure the wire to the switch. Thanks |

My Buell 01 M2 which has an X1 wiring harness has a right angle plug which fits over the oil pressure sending unit like a small spark plug socket. The sending unit has a threaded stud [10-32 thread I think]. You need to get a #10 ring terminal [use the solder type not the crimp, solder it on, use two #10 nuts and put a #10 star washer next to the terminal[in between the two nuts] so you get a good signal and let it go. Not a bad idea to cover up as much as you can with shrink tubing too. |

The oil pressure switch has one threaded stud terminal on it. The wire from the harness has a ring type connector with a rubber boot and a nut secures the connection. See Figure 3-47 of 97-98 S3 FSM for a closeup pic of the oil pressure switch. There was a change to the 98 S3 voltage regulator wiring. - The +12V harness wire is red with a female bullet connector that mates with a male bullet connector from the VR. - The ground wire is a separate wire spliced to a common ground point at one end and the other end has a star washer type ring terminal that goes between the VR and where it mounts to the frame. |

I installed a voltmeter on my '99 after the stator went out several years ago. It has run right at 13.9v ever since then, until today. I noticed that the voltage was slowly dropping to 13 volts so I cleaned the ground (already had the stainless star washer) and checked the output lead. After a test ride that appears to have fixed it. Glad that I had the meter on board. |

Mike I have a volt meter on my 99 S3. Stock charging system. It runs 14.1 on cooler days and 14.0 when temps rise above 85. The voltage drops to about 13.2 at idle. Good to get voltage readings from others. Thanks Joe |
