Alessio, I did it pretty often. And beside some reworked XB heads there is even a 88 X1 in Italy with one of my engines. You may contact Angelo Nicolini from Nakedstore for further details (he´s a Hillbilly Motors dealer). He is a friend of mine. I can´t go too deep into detail but whenever I build a 88 street engine it gets the crank balanced, the heads reworked and normally a ECU mapping (throttle body boring is not necessary for street engines). Otherwise You will never get the full potential out of the Big Bore kit. Best regards Alex M-TeK Engineering |

Hogs, the answer is YES. Just give me a little more time to confirm that everything works out ok under any circumstances. At the moment I have a 1470 engine which runs pretty strong (more than enough for a street bike). And it uses all stock injection components. I will keep You informed about further details. hi Alex, couple of questions for you: already own a xb12 totally stock and thought to increase its power.Like many others here I think that the very first step is going for a good exhaust,K&N filter and tfi over stock ecm.Althought I know it's a basic upgrade I think it isn't going to quite satisfy me and I'd like to go for some more. First you have to know that I use my bike basically on the street for a sport fan.Never been in a race track and, maybe, never go.But I like to climb every streets that go up to every mount with lot of passionate (and very fast) riders. I thought to big bore my engine but,as often earlier said by you,it's nothing without porting heads and balancing crank. Anyway it would be much better if you suggest me what I have to do.I mean that you can say which step of preparation is the one for my needs. I have a 9 spare engine too.Do you think it could make better the job?! Thank you for your help |

Hi Giu, it is very hard to give exact suggestions what someone should do with his engine as different folks have different expectations. I can give You an overview of what an engine will feel like but still it will be Your decision which way to go. First of all the short stroked 9er engine will run a little smoother and revv up a little faster than the 12 does. As You know the 9er engine has a broader rpm range while the 12er produces more torque at low rpm. Both engines will do the same after beeing bored out to either 1170/1200 or 1430/1470. Just at a higher level. Lots of torque at low rpm with the 1430/1470 engines is a lot of fun when coming out of the corners. Still You need to remember that too much torque isn?t that much fun. It requires more careful use of the throttle grip as You may end with Your rear wheel loosing grip. It will be even worse in the rain. The 1170/1200 engine doesn?t produce too high torque numbers so it is easier to rip the throttle fully open while keeping it under control. It is hard to say which engine is better suited for mountain riding. The most difference is probably that the 1170/1200er is more like a sport engine while the 1430/1470er is a little bit more "Harley-nized". The best thing to do before going into an engine upgrade would be test riding both versions or at least talking to people who did it. Unfortunately I can?t give You any better suggestions. Maybe You should ride a stock XB12 in direct comparison to a stock XB9 to feel the difference in engine behavior. Don?t worry about any lack of power. It will be gone after a professional big bore conversion . Good luck with Your decision. If You have more questions please feel free to ask. Best regards Alex M-TeK Engineering |
