Recently built a custom with a 97 buell motor.While test driving I noticed oil coming up through clutch lever. Obviously I have a vent problem in the primary. Trans fluid is 1 quart.Need Help. Thanks | ||

Possible causes are the engine crankcase seal to the primary case is leaking thus allowing crankcase pressure to feed oil into the primary/transmission case. This can cause a positive pressure to build up in the primary case and force primary oil into the clutch cable where it would come out at the clutch lever. You need to determine if the primary oil level is rising over time when the engine is running or, if it's OK, make sure that the transmission vent hose is not blocked. | ||

Thanks for insight. I think it may be the crankcase seal because the oil coming out of lever has motor oil texture and not tranny oil. Can you tell me exactly where the transmission vent hose is located on tranny,and what would cause the crankase seal to blow. Thank you again. This was a donor motor for a custom so I am not familiar with correct hose routing. | ||

I don't have a Buell service manual any more but a look at one of those would be real helpful. That has excellent detail (words and diagrams) on the oiling systems (both engine and primary/transmission case), the lines, and the venting. Once you see normal venting scheme for that engine you can see if you have met the same general plan on your custom. But the details of the oil tank, supply and return lines, and vent lines all needs to be considered. In a ineptly or improperly done custom installation it is possible that incorrect venting on the engine side is forcing oil past the seals and into the primary case. Or it could simply be a bad crankshaft seal as suggested above. Jack | ||

Can't beat experience. Turned out to be a pinched tranny vent. Thank you for your help, I am now ridding with an oil free shirt. |
