About 700 miles after the first 1000 mile service, and about 1 hour into a ride I decide to stop for a a bite, fill, and check the oil. Crap - none showing on the stick (world starts spinning a bit faster). Never though this paint-shaker would suck it back that fast! Okay lets get into it....I get it to (really) level ground and recheck thinking I might see a drop - maybe there is, or maybe I was just hoping a lot. Anyway I find a quart of 20/50 in the middle of the Rockies (luck) and drop 3/4 of it in. Drove for 30 minutes, recheck, add the rest 1/4 in, drive for 30 minutes, recheck, now showing right at the top of the full line. Another 3 hours home and it's still showing at the top of the full line. It certainly can't be good but do you think riding at 1.5 quarts (down 1 quart from the top of the full line) did any damage? No leaks, no smoke, hmmm w}here did it go? Was it ever there....lesson learned. Thanks in advance. | ||

Thanks for your comment... I forgot to mention that it's a 12Ss so a bit more room in the swingarm; maybe that helps. I also did a bit of reading on dry oil sumps and it sounds like it should be good running low too (as long as it's not running really hot). | ||

I rode from Milwaukee to Seattle a few years ago. Some days the M2 would lose little to no oil, other days it would lose more than a 1/2 quart, one day almost a quart, the next none. Similar conditions, similar riding. All I could figure out is that it might have something to do with barometric pressure and relative humidity in the air causing some days to be a higher oil misting day than others. All of my oil loss, as far as I could figure, went out the head vents and down and out the vent line which was re-routed from the a/c to a small filter hanging down by the shock. I suppose some road critter could have grabbed onto the vent line and sucked some out, but I don't think that was the case (although I did feel a bump one day). Eventually I'll be going to the newer style of rocker boxes, unless I swap the bike(s) off before then. Reportedly the XB style rocker boxes virtually eliminate oil mist loss out of the top vents. I still don't know why some days they lose a lot and other days none, curious why, but don't know and probably never will for certain. Prior to my Seattle ride I did a weekend run up to Duluth from Milwaukee and lost a 1/2 quart of oil, on the ride back I lost none and further lost none for the entire following month. Dang oil sucking road critters, might have to rig up a bug zapper and hang it from the bottom of the bike for the next long ride. | ||

Dont be worried. These bikes just burn alittle oil. I figure mine burns about a half oz. per 100 miles. I check my oil at the end of every other tank of gas. For my 05 12s it takes 4oz. to go from the lower level back to the upper level. | ||

Straight after your service you say. Sounds like the shop did not run it and then check the level after changing the oil and filter. The filter and remote oil tank lines do take up a bit of oil so perhaps this is the reason. | ||

Harley specs say if your bike uses less than or a whole quart with in 1000k it is acceptable | ||
