Thats what the manual tells you to do. Okay at the usual risk, am I just stupid or is the stator plug a bear to remove? I finally got through pulling the rotor and clutch, I had to use the air impact, the bouncing trick on the 18" breaker bar didn't work. The air wrench remove both easily. well i did have to put the socket on the end of the gun and attach the air hose and set the regulator to 90 psi Anyways the stator looked fine, until I looked at the back side, wiring was all slagged where it joins the stator. Looks very similar to pictures posted in the kv. By the way, I did run Mobil one 75-90 in there for the past 30K miles. So all I have left to do is get the stator plug out, I tried pulling it with slip joint pliers and it wasn't coming out without a fight, so I decided to have a beer and post before breaking anything. Does the plug come apart or is it a one piece deal that has to be squeezed (sqooze ?) through the primary cover? Thanks matt |

I seem to remember pulling the rubber seal on the backside of the connector out of the plastic to expose the terminal locks. Depress the ears and the round terminal ends will come out. When you put it back together it does not matter which order you put the terminals into the connector. |

Quote from manual: "Remove stator Wiring Grommet(3) from left crankcase half". "Withdraw stator wiring(4) from grommet hole in left crankcase half. Remove stator".

Okay, So grommet 3 should pull through the primary? I tried that a bunch and felt like I needed to cut the plug in order to pull it through. I have the wire disconnect from the regulator, cut all the cable ties and have it pulled back to by the starter. One would think all I needed to do was pull the wire back through the primary, or engine case I guess. What bugs me, is it doesn't reference "pull the wire like a friggin gorilla" Just to be sure the wire from the stator to the VR connector is one piece correct? So what you're saying is it should be difficult to extract Thanks Matt |

Is the grommet molded to the stator wiring? Just curious. |

I'd say yes, but I've been wrong before |

Is it possible to squirt a little WD-40 on the part of the grommet on the other side? Might help lubricate the rubber and make it a little easier to pull through. |

Try applying force directly to the grommit or fold in the grommit lips rather then trying to pull the wires. I remember fussing with it a little, but I don't think it was a huge problem. I never pull on wires just on principal, so I am sure I would have pushed on the grommit. |

I've got to second what "Reepicheep" posted. DON'T pull on the wires to get the grommet out. Work on the grommet itself after a liberal dose of WD or something similar. |

Okay, turns out the wire was pinched under the starter, once I got some slack I was able to push and pull the grommet through. The wire from the stator to the VR plug is one piece, so it didn't really matter. The wires at the stator were destroyed to begin with. Now I know how to remove the wiring nicely. Thanks |
