I have a 99 X1 with the Pro Series Race Kit. The Bike starts and idles fine, but At crusing speeds (approx. 30 mph) it runs poorly (loss of power) and backfires. The engine light indicates no trouble codes. I have replaced the spark plugs, wires and ignition coil. None of which solved the problem. Any Ideas?? |

Did you have the TPS reset when installing the race kit ECM? If so, then it sounds like an intake manifold seal air leak. Set the bike at a fast idle, around 2000 rpm, and spray contact cleaner or WD40 all around the seals at the manifold to cylinder head connection and also at the manifold to carburetor connection. If you notice the idle change noticeably, you've most likely found an intake seal air lead. Replace the seals. |

Be careful when spraying the contact cleaner around the seals to avoid spraying it into the intake. That would give you a false indication of a problem. |

Has the bike been sitting with the same gas for a couple of months? I have an 2001 S3 and the bike would run fine until about 60mph and then it would stall and run like crap. They drained the gas and the thing ran just fine. |

I checked for a leak in the intake the way describe by blake above and no rpm change happened. The gas is...now a couple weeks old, but when the problem started it was fresh. I had been riding it on regular basis. What are some other possibilities...I would really rather not take it to the dealer. |

Water in the gas?? Mine did the same thing. I rode to work every, day rain or shine. Water got in the tank through the gas cap. It would start and run fine, but, going down the highway it would buck and miss. I also think I got water in the tank when I washed it. Took the tank off and emptied it into clear plastic container and there was the water. I have since retired and don't ride too much in the rain and I resealed the gas cap ring. I also tape the gas cap up with duct tape before washing. Been running fine since. |

Might be a dumb question,But have ya had all the recalls done? 2 that come to mind are Fuel Tank Vent and Fuel Filter. If your not the original owner you may wanna call you local dealer, they should be able to run a Safety Campaign History over the phone if you give them your VIN. |

I think even when your engine light isn't on doesn't mean your not popping trouble codes. It could be happening very fast and then stored as a historical code. The only way to view historical is through the ECM as far as I know. My 02 x1 was bogging and running rough and surging..no engine lights. I hooked it up to the vdts and there was a code 14 (engine temp. sensor short). It was historical since the sensor was loose and only shorted when it bumped around or whatever. I tightened it and problem fixed |

According to the service manual the Service light shows both historic and current trouble codes. I used the jumper wire to run the diagnostic cycle that the bike has (no expensive computer) and still nothing showed. But I have been wrong before. |

sorry i keep forgetting to answer that question. Yes i did...I didn't have it reset right away...however i did have it reset a few months after i installed it. I didn't notice any difference though. and now that was a few years ago. |

It might be worth adding a TPS reset to your list then too. It's not unheard of that a technician performs that procedure improperly. |

an update: Ok, so over the weekend I bypassed the fuel filter and rode it for about a mile. During that time it did not show any symptoms. replaced the fuel filter and went on a 100+ mile ride yesterday. During that ride it did show the symptoms, however not nearly as often as it was happening before. could it be that the new fuel filter is too restrictive??, or the fuel pump is getting tired??. Being that harley no longer makes the specific fuel filter i just picked up one from a local suzuki dealer (which is what my harley dealer told me to do). |

You might try some fuel conditioner that is for fuel injectors. One way to check the fuel pump is to give it a pressure test where it should test out around 50 psi. Any less and that might indicate a faulty pressure regulator or pump. |
