I am tring to remove the seat but the key will only allow the seat to be lifted about a inch. There is a pin under the seat that if hit upward will then release the seat. I have been told there is a release lever but I can;t find anything. I don't have a user manual or any documentation. Help!

I have a 2001 and there is a t-handle on the kickstand side of the bike right behind the beginning of the tail section. You could also move the latch by reaching under the seat and tail section where the locking post is located.

I looked in that spot for a handle but found none. There is no latch only a pointy nose mushroom looking bolt that comes out of the seat and goes through the hole in the frame. Thats the one that if you force it through the hole the seat comes off. Thanks for the suggestion.
