Well .. I had the S1 dyno tuned yesterday finally ... (Well - I didn't, Dan Bilansky at Hal's HD/Buell in New Berlin did it)

My tires were showing cords at the time so I didn't have a baseline run before the top-end rebuild ... so I will do my comparisons to a stock S1 (remember - this is a 97 S1, so it's non-t-storm heads..)

I checked with one of the Buell driveline engineers who also has an built up S1 (although quite a bit more than mine) and he checked into it and a stock S1 will dyno out between high 60's and low 70's rwhp .. So for comparison's sake, I will use 72rwhp for a stock S1 as a baseline.

My bike is setup with the following -

-Out of the box XB heads and cylinders
-XB9 pistons (higher compression)
-Stock Lightning cams
-S.E. selectable curve ignition module
-Stock 40mm cv carb
-Crossroads MaliAire air cleaner
-Force exhaust

Dyno results were: (I don't have the graph yet, will post it up when I get it)

97rwhp and 84 ft/lbs torque ...

Going by these numbers, I had a REAL gain of nearly 25hp over a stock S1 ... I also learned that a Force exhaust actually prohibits real power except higher in the rpm's (I actually pretty much knew that- but I like the loudness)

An S3 with the same setup except the Buell Race Exhaust and 44mm S.E. cv carb was doing between 105 and 108rwhp.

I think I will be adding both when the finances and opportunity arise.

But all in all, to gain over 20+rwhp without major engine mods, using bolt-on stock Buell parts really IS the best bang for the buck !

I have a 1999 S3 that needs some work. I was thinking of finding some stock replacement heads, but wondering about the XB heads now. With the cams I have, plus the upgraded Thunderstorm heads, should I even mess with it? I need to pull the lower rocker box off, so it wouldn't take much more to pull the heads and pistons. Thanks in advance.

The XB heads will yield more power than the t-storm heads ... But it all depends on what you want out of it. ... I have 2 bikes .. a 99 M2 with the T-storm heads, and less aggressive cams than the Lightning .. and I am leaving it that way, it's my all around do everything bike .. my S1 is the track bike, obnoxious, basically what the hell bike .. so I went with the best bolt-on performance upgrade I could afford ...

Your motor in good condition is normally good enough for most folks, and had my S1 been an S1W (S1W is basically the same setup as yours - T-storm heads, Lightning cams ...) I might not have done the swap ... at best you would gain around 10hp over what your bike should put out stock with just bolt on XB heads(without major work, like bigger valves, porting, big bore, bigger carb etc...).Let's not forget the time and money in Dyno-tuning to get it all in sync ....

I will ultimately gain about 30hp over my S1 in stock trim when all is said and done... that made the swap worthwhile...

Depending on what work yours needs, I'd leave the T-storms in .. just my opinion...

I'm confused about using the XB 9 piston, would'nt the bore size be different thus changing the engine size to a 900 as well.

No. The XB9 and XB12 bore are identical. Only stroke is different.

Blake is right ... bore is identical, in fact - heads and cylinders from a 9 or 12 are interchangeable if I am not mistaken ..

The difference in my application is the fact that the 9 piston is domed giving higher compression, stroke doesn't change either .. The shorter stroke on the 9's are what give's it a few more rpm's than the 12 ..
