I am getting some tappet like noise after my engine is throughly warmed up. I replaced all lifters and the noise is still there.

I then listened with a screw driver to different areas of the engine and its the oil pump that seems the loudest. When the engine is cold there is no noise, but when hot it really clatters.

So, my questions are could an oil pump cause this kind of noise? I have read the threads about the bad gears. Could a bad gear cause the noise before complete failure? (If it were a bad gear I think the noise would be there all the time, not just when the oil is hot.)

Has anyone else experienced a similar incident? When I first start the engine and its cold and the oil is thick, it sounds pretty good.

What else might cause lifter type noises in a throughly warmed up engine? I am at a loss!
