have installed se575 cams.. seems to be a bit noisy under cover.. also have jims hydrosloids ..out of adjustment? clearenced push rod tubes for aluminum 7/16 push rods.. could they still be contacting the tubes? but once again if I put my ear to the cam cover thats where I hear the clackity clack sound..any suggestions greatly appreciated.. |

Did you clearance the cam box for the additional lift that the tappets/lifters are experiencing? If not, they are doing it for you. Not good. |

I installed everything and rotated by hand and saw no clearence issues.. perhaps I my have missed something.. |

what do you mean by clearance cam box.. the cams did not interfere with pinion race or lobe swing issues..do you mean the lifter smashing the anti rotation pins? pardon my ignorance.. |

Not the pins, the material at the lower portion of the tappets... there's a pic around here somewhere. If you check the mechanism with the lifters/tappets installed then you are probably okay. |

Some cam lobes require grinding on underside of lifter bores as the lobes interfere as they turn--but you would have noticed when the motor refused to turn over. And some springs/retainers are bigger/taller and cause contact with rocker boxes. Stock Buell cams are matched to lessen gear noise for EPA regs, all after market cam gear does not do this, so you will get much more noise from them. Add in the Hydrosolids and adjustable pushrods and the noise can become amazing. Ask RT about the noise from motor I sold him--LOL. |

Whenever a roller lifter in a sportster engine passes through maximum cam lift, the forces on the cam gear teeth change direction. If there is more than .002 backlash, the change of force and direction will result in an audible "click" as the backlash moves from one side of the tooth to the other. Gear noise always occurs at idle and lower engine RPM.>>>>>>>> This paragraph was taken from the "Andrews" catalog in regard to Noises typical of a sportster or Buell motor. Thought it might be of use to calm the nerves of some of us Buell owners. Provided all's in good working order, you got to just get over worrying about the noisy valve train. I suppose roller rockers would also quiet it down some as well. |

Was forewarned of this when I had cams installed in the Sportster, very unnerving at first. |

Sometimes the rocker arms will contact the Rocker box cover. Some clearancing (slight) would take care of that. Easy to check. Pull rocker cover off and look for a mark in the cover and/or a shiny spot on rocker arm. |

Sorry, I didn't see the "cam cover" part of the post. Still worth a look. |

Maybe this brings a little light: http://www.sportster.org/tech/883-1200/top-end-noi se.shtml To use better tappets lowers the valvetrain noise a lot,due to my experiences. |

Typically it is the rocker arm or spring hitting the rocker cover. Take a dremel w/ grinding attachment to it. Easy peazy |
