I have an ‘06 XB12Ss with the Buell race kit. After getting my 10,000 mile maintenance, I rode it from Michigan to South Carolina with no issues. On the ride back the bike started sputtering and the engine light would flash when I maintained the same speed for a long distance. When this happened I would role off the throttle and the issue would go away for a little bit. I stopped at a Buell dealer on the way back, and they said there weren’t any error codes. It runs fine riding around town, and when it does sputter on the highway it seems to help if I role on and off the throttle. Any ideas? |

Check the ECM wiring bundle where it goes over the battery terminal. It has a sharp edge and can put a darn near invisible nick in the wire and randomly short out some wire. It may not be the problem, but it's an easy check. |

From your description, it sounds like it is closed loop related. The fact that it goes away when you change the throttle, which kicks it out of closed loop, is consistent with that. O2 sensors are funny about setting codes. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't, and I'm not sure exactly why. A local customer just had his bike in yesterday, and it had similar issues. I found his O2 sensor connector had come unplugged. We fixed that, and while there found his hed temp sensor wire getting frayed from rubbing on the rocker box cover. Heat shrink tubing fixed that. I'd yank the airbox and take a look under there. Al |

What is this wire, and should it look like that?

Funny you should ask. The same customer that had his O2 sensor disconnected also had a BADLY chafed head temp sensor wire. His was much worse than yours. I heat shrunk wrapped it to prevent further damage. Yours is probably OK, but I'd do something similar to protect the wire. Al |
