Does the air return line serve to pressurize the tank, return air, return oil/foam? Just curious.. Would love to find out the cuase of the foam which prevents a full oil tank. |

The return line is used to return scavenged oil back to the oil tank. The oil comes from the cam compartment and the actual crank case. Remember, these motors area "dry" sump. All of the oil is in the tank and only what the motor needs is in the motor itself. It's circulated from the pump, to the filter into the engine including all bearings and top end. It then returns to the bottom of the motor via the oil return passages then to the scavenging side of the oil pump. The service manual has a very good pictorial of the oiling system. Why is it foaming? Good question. Is the oil clean? Does it have moisture in it? Is the oil tank over filled? All of the above and other things could cause foaming. I'm sure others will chime in with suggestions and observations. Brad |

I'm sorry I wasn't clear. I want to know about the vent line. That return hose to the top of the oil tank. The manual has very little information on it and it is not part of the color diagram in the manual. |

isent the vent line there to equalize pressure between swing arm and crank case? as for the foaming I noticed that to. usually when the tank is full to a little over full dose this seem to accur. what kind of oil are you using? I'm currently using Redline 20w50 |

I've used Amsoil and now Mobil1. It's been well known that a tuber oil tank that is more than 1/2 full foams and spits out oil. Never linked to a type of oil. Just curious is some type of catch can then return line to the oil tank would allow any oil mist from the vent line to settle down and not be foam/ if that is even the source of foam. |

No answers?? I started my bike yesterday with the oil cap off. The oil level was about 1/4" on the bottom of the stick. Then about 1 minute of engine running. It foamed up soo quick that wasn't able to put the plug back on. Messy. If the foam could be routed to a tank that would allow it to turn to liqued we'd be able to use all of the all tank capacity. More oil = cooler oil = cleaner oil = longer engine. I assume the foam came for the vent line-- could have been from the return line. ?? |
