The land speed record guys have been running turbo-charged Buells for years.

If you are going to turbo an XB the 03-05(?) models are preferred because of the hole
through the frame. The plumbing would be more difficult on the later models.

Biggest hurdle to overcome on Buells is getting fuel injection to richen up as boost increases.Several ways this is done on other FI bikes but whether you can use these strategies on a Buell?? Rising rate, boost referenced fuel pressure regulator is one way(that is what I had on last set-up on my Buell--but it was carbed)it increases fuel pressure in relation to boost so injectors feed more fuel. Other bikes use a piggyback set-up that adds fuel with boost.I have one of these and am going to be trying it on new FI turbo bike--but absolutely nothing is stock.
And then there is the complete standalone ecms like Motec, etc(probably be here eventually.)
I am hoping that with the strides Al and Terry P have made working with the stock ecm I will be able to use this with the piggyback--we'll see???
I believe even Power Commander has a newer box that can be setup to run off boost signal.
As always with a Buell, you are on your own. If you had a Hayabusa everyone makes a turbo set-up for it.

Another concern with our bikes is alot of turbos are plain bearings and need lots more oil pressure than our oil system provides, you will need a ball-bearing turbo. Then you need to mount turbo so oil will drain back to crankcase properly--or add a scavenge pump.
One of the reasons that the Aerocharger style turbos were so suited to Buells, selfcontained oil system, variable vanes so no wastegate needed.

Jim,
I've seen a valve on the side of the aerochargers with perhaps a vacuum line or two attached. Is this some kind of popoff valve? Just curious how they control overboost.

No,that is the controller for vanes. It has hose to sense boost signal from plenum and adjusts vanes accordingly so there is no overboost. I have seen blow off valves added to them, but the original kits did not have them.

Check with the Turbo Doc in Ogden Utah,he was working on sourcing a similar style turbo and is a good source for repairs/parts for Aerochargers. They are still around--alot used on snowmobiles. That is where I got my last one.
If someone is really interested I have one with mount and plenum for a tuber.

Hey yas, Mine turbo xb finally lives and breathes. Changed to a larger turbo from last time, added a oil scavenge pump, plumbed it back to swingarm fill point and drilled the frame and fuel rail so i could plumb a rising rate reg, drilled injectors, used a power commander, water injection and blow off valve. Hid most of it under the tail,Exhaust plumbed thru a dual 5" muffler with dumpies in stock position, can still run all stock fairings. its a 12R by the way.Definately not something I would try again in a hurry.
