I just bought a 2006 Lightning xb12Ss Long. The previous owner didn't get an owner's manual so now I don't have one either. When I check the oil, should I have the bike on the side stand or should I have the bike vertical to check the oil. I added some oil today because I couldn't see any on the dipstick when I had the bike vertical and just a little on the tip of the dipstick when it was on the side stand. After I added some today the oil level is just below the "ADD" line when the bike is vertical and a bit below the "OVERFILL" line when the bike is on the side stand. |

On a level surface. Who knew checking oil could be so complicated and tedious. |

My oil level seems to be erratic. I got home from a 1/2 hour ride in 90 degree heat so bike was very hot. I checked oil and it was below the add line .. it is usually at 1/2 mark. So I add about 1/8 QT of oil. Suddenly it's overfull? I like WTF? I put the cap on and crank up the bike for 60 seconds. When I turn off and open the cap the oil comes flying out .. way overfull. So I suck out the same amount of oil I just added ... and now it's still above the halfway mark. Doesn't make any sense! |

On my XB9R, it says to check the oil level after about 10 minutes of riding, on the sidestand, engine off. How do you check yours, again? |

Strongly suggest not adding oil unless the level when checked per the specified procedure as described above by Sparky is at or below the "Low" mark. |

The online owner's manual at Buell.com says to check the oil when the engine is "hot" (at least ten minute ride), on level ground, on the side stand. My oil level can also be erratic. It can be hard, but I think the best course of action is to only pay real attention to the oil level under the above specified conditions. |

And don't forget that the manual ('06 Uly) also says to screw the dipstick all the way in. Every brand has their own way to check oil level in dry sump motors, it seems. |
