On a new XB9SX with about 250 miles, I noticed yesterday when checking the oil after a ride, that the oil smells strongly of gas. I had this problem at about 60 miles, changed the oil and it has been fine since then. FYI, I put some fuel injector cleaner in a few days ago; and also, the bike got horrible gas mileage on the last tank of gas. The bike seems to be running ok and has good power - what could be the cause of this? I would rather try and deal with it myself before having to make arrangements with the dealer (unless absolutely necessary). Could fouled plugs cause this? Please help... |

First I am wondering why a bike with 250 miles needs fuel injector cleaner, but that is perhaps a different topic. Are tracking the oil level carefully? Is it increasing (indicating it is accumulating gas)? On my old Yamaha, with carbs and a vacuum operated petcock (that never worked), I could tell you exactly what your problem is. But on a fuel injected Buell, it seems less clear. 250 miles is young as well. I might want to give the engine 500 to 1000 miles to break in before I start worrying about anything. |

How could the bike get horrible gas mileage yet run OK and give good power? Did the Check Engine Light come on at any time? Don't forget, you need to break it in easy for the first 500 to 1000 miles or so. Does it have a tendency to foul plugs? If so, it probably needs to have the TPS reset and/or AFV checked by the dealer. You might try monitoring the oil level for a few days, being consistent with checking it the same way each time. If the level is rising, then something may be leaking into the oil. I'd stay away from injector cleaner until it has at least 5 or 10k miles on the clock. Usually injectors accumulate gunk over time which tends to constrict the metering orifice. I don't think this is your problem. |

thanks for the insights. To respond to the above question. The bike was winterized and fuel stabilizer used, I recently got bike out of storage, hence the reason for the injector cleaner. The problem existed prior to using the injector cleaner. Also, I have no idea how a bike can run good and get bad mileage. I spoke to the dealer and will be bringing the bike by Wed or Thurs. There is absolutely and undoubtedly an excessive gas smell coming from the oil and the level had gone up slightly. |

Makes sense! Certainly prudent to give the dealer a chance to look at it, they should be the experts and will have the bike on hand. I think I would want at least two tanks of gas past the stabilizer / injector cleaner stuff before I made a final judgment on fuel economy. One tank to get the "stuff" out, and another tank to make sure the ECM has found it's new happy place. That will give the rings time to seat as well.. by 1000 miles, it should be pretty much broken in. Let us know what you find out! |

There was one thing I would like to add. I have changed the oil 2x due to the heavy gas smell and there were no metal bits on the magnetic oil drain-plug. Isn't it common on a new bike to have metal particles on the oil drain plug? |

Just a little bit of thought. If you do short rides (less than 10 miles). You will get a very strong gas smell in your oil. Some people will not agree with me on this but most of the time you will start fouling plug with this also. Take a 30+ mile ride a week and most of your problem should go away. Some times you won't find metal on the drain plug until your 500 mile mark. (Message edited by p47b on May 02, 2007) |
