On my CityX the 1st belt broke in the first 6,000 miles. The second belt broke at 15,000 miles. Is this acceptable? |

I don't think so. This and your other post are likely related... I am assuming those were rear wheel bearings? Either your usage is exceptional (do you park the bike in a salt water lagoon every evening?) or something must not be lined up correctly. Misalignment would explain all three of your failures (belt, tensioner, and rear wheel bearings). I would be very concerned about your 5th gear drive assembly as well (which is not a good thing, as on an XB that means spliting the cases). Is there more to the story? Your case is highly unusual. |

No - Uly - I have almost 20,000 miles on my Uly and even though I had an off road adventure where the bike went for a heck of a ride, it is still intact. I will replace the belt because it shows some scuffs on the side of the belt, but other than that it still looks good. M2 - I stripped teeth off the belt at 32,000 miles at the drag strip. I noticed after the fact that the teeth were cracking. The belt was six years old at the time of failure and I was launching the bike on its rear wheel every time. I will also say I rode the bike home. I replaced the belt with an '06 belt and now it has 45,000 miles on the bike and the belt still looks good. I wish I knew more why some people have so much problems with belts. I believe that it has to do with handling during tire changes or misalignment in components on the bike that flex the belt causing damage that later turns into belt failure. I just wish I knew a way to prove my hypotheses. |
