I was attempting to change the oil for the first time on my 2000 X1 and I took the plug out of the drain tube and let it drain for awhile. Maybe 1 quart of oil drained out. I would think that it has at least 3 quarts of oil inside. I took off the filter and a little more oil came out. Most bikes I've changed the oil on have a threaded plug on the bottom of the engine and out she comes. Is there something I'm missing? Thanks. | ||

Sounds like you were just low on oil. Did you pull th cap off the oil tank so as not to create a vacuum? | ||

Also make sure the oil is hot before draining it. Cold oil can run like molasses and give you a slow trickle, ,making it look like it is nearly done draining when there is actually plenty more to go. | ||

Don't drain/change the oil unless it's hot. Dry sump oil systems need to run a while to return oil from the bottom of the engine to the oil tank. You have oil "hiding" in the engine. If you fill the tank and start the engine you will blow the oil cap off and paint the ceiling of your garage with oil. |
