Good news for you folks with zumos. Garmin recently released an update for the software on the zumo 550. It updates the zumo from V2.5 to V3.00 and is a semi-major update: http://www.garmin.com/support/agree.jsp?id=1907 Agree to the lawyer page at the link and you can read the details of the changes and download the update. For those who have not done it, it is a no-brainer to do the update. 1 - Save the download to your desktop. 2 - Turn on the zumo 550. 3 - Plug it into your USB port and let it stabilize in the USB mode (you'll see it as a Removable Drive in Windows Explorer). 4 - Double click the download and follow the bouncing ball. Garmin has a thing called "Webupdater" (mentioned in the zumo manual) that will, in theory, let you go online and do the update. Webupdater can be a little troublesome as it often craps out in the middle of the update because of data flow problems between the GPS and Garmin's servers. I don't see Webupdater mentioned on the update page and wouldn't try to use as the download way is so simple and risk free. Jack |

'Enhanced off-route recalculation for mixed on/off road routes and routes with shaping points.' Does that mean you can disable the auto-recalcute route function? |

I think not David. I saw a comment in a GPS newsgroup that, even with those changes, you still cannot turn autozoom and autorecalculate off. And those are two major annoyances with the zumo I guess. Nor can you get it to think and display using UTM coordinates. The UTM thing is not a biggie in the U.S. but for the rest of the world it is a drawback. I really sometimes think that the people at Garmin that design software are not GPS users and never talk to any of them. Jack |

Oh oh! Now some bad news on the update! I just saw this in the chatter from some zumo users over on sci.geo.satellite-nav: >> Beware many users are having screens lock or go dark after the v3.0 >> upgrade. I'm waiting until the v3.0 bugs are fixed before I upgrade, >> don't want to lock. freeze or corrupt my Zumo. In any case try to >> backup your Zumo database/files before you upgrade. > > Yep it is a little suprising that when you pan the map screen and then > touch 'go' the unit shuts down. > > Maybe if they had issued a beta earlier these problems could have been > found and people would have been more tolerant That is quoted for info, I don't have a zumo but it might be a good idea to hold off on the update. They'll fix it, they always do. Jack |
